How to play Box Fan?

Game Objective:

The primary objective of Box Fan Solitaire is to move all 52 cards from the tableau (fans) to the four foundation piles, building each foundation up in sequence by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Standard 52-card deck is used.
  • Foundations: Four piles, each starting with an Ace of a different suit. These Aces are removed from the deck before dealing and placed face up as the starting cards for the foundations.
  • Fans (Tableau): Sixteen fan piles are created:
  • The remaining 48 cards are dealt face up into 16 fans, with 3 cards in each fan.
  • All cards are dealt face up; there are no face-down cards in Box Fan Solitaire.
  • Play Areas Defined:
  • Foundations: Where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Fans (Tableau): The main play area where cards are arranged in columns (fans) and built down by alternating color.

Box Fan Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:
  • Built up by suit, starting from Ace and ending with King (e.g., Ace♣, 2♣, 3♣, …, King♣).
  • Only Aces may be placed on empty foundation spaces at the start.
  • Fans (Tableau):
  • Built down by alternating color (e.g., a red card on a black card, and vice versa).
  • Only the top card of each fan is available for movement.
  • Only one card may be moved at a time, either to another fan or to a foundation.
  • Empty fan spaces may only be filled with a King.
  • No Redeal: There is no stock or redeal in Box Fan Solitaire; once cards are dealt, play proceeds only with the tableau and foundations.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:
  • Move the top card of any fan to a foundation if it continues the sequence by suit.
  • Move the top card of one fan onto another fan if it is one rank lower and of the opposite color (e.g., 7♣ onto 8♥).
  • Fill any empty fan space with a King.
  • No sequences (multiple cards) may be moved at once; only single cards can be moved.
  • No new cards are introduced into play after the initial deal; there is no stock or reserve.
  • If no legal moves remain (no cards can be moved to foundations or fans according to the rules), play ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The game is won when all 52 cards are successfully moved to the four foundations, each built up in sequence by suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing/Unwinnable Condition: The game is lost or becomes unwinnable if no further legal moves are possible and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Fans: Only Kings may be placed into empty fan spaces. No other cards may fill these spaces.
  • No Redeal: There is no redeal or reshuffling. Once all possible moves are exhausted, the game ends.
  • Card Movement Restriction: Only the top card of each fan is available for play. No sequences of cards may be moved together.
  • All Cards Face Up: All cards are visible from the start, eliminating uncertainty and making the game fully open-information.
  • No Stock or Reserve: There are no additional piles to draw from during play.

Summary of Unique Features:
Box Fan Solitaire is characterized by its open layout (all cards face up), strict one-card movement, building fans down by alternating color, and the requirement that only Kings may occupy empty fans. There is no redeal, making every move critical for success.
