How to play Indefatigable?

Game Objective:

The primary objective in Indefatigable Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau to the four foundation piles, building each foundation up in sequence from Ace to King in the same suit.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: One standard 52-card deck is used.
  • Foundations: 4 foundation piles. At the start, remove all four Aces from the deck and place one Ace face-up on each foundation pile.
  • Tableau: 12 tableau piles. Deal 4 cards face-up to each tableau pile (totaling 48 cards).
  • Stock: There is no traditional stock pile; instead, the tableau is redealt when no moves are possible.
  • Face-up/Face-down: All cards in the tableau are dealt face-up. Foundations are always face-up.

Key Play Areas:

  • Foundations: Where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Tableau: 12 piles where cards are built up or down by suit and from which cards are played to the foundations.
  • Redeal Area: Used to collect and redeal tableau cards when no moves remain.

Indefatigable Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:
  • Build up by suit, starting from Ace, then 2, 3, …, up to King.
  • Only cards of the same suit and one rank higher than the current top card can be placed on a foundation (e.g., 2♠ on Ace♠).
  • Cards placed on the foundation cannot be removed.
  • Tableau:
  • Build either up or down by suit (e.g., 4♣ can accept 3♣ or 5♣).
  • Only one card may be moved at a time.
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play.
  • Any card may fill an empty tableau space.
  • Redeals:
  • When no further moves are possible, all tableau cards are collected (in a specified order) and redealt into 12 tableau piles of four cards each.
  • There are either two redeals allowed or unlimited redeals depending on the implementation; consult the specific rules of your version.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, you may:
  • Move the top card of any tableau pile to a foundation pile if it continues the sequence by suit.
  • Move the top card of any tableau pile to another tableau pile if it is one rank higher or lower and of the same suit.
  • Fill any empty tableau pile with any available card.
  • Continue making moves until no legal moves remain.
  • When stuck, perform a redeal:
  • Collect all tableau cards in a left-to-right, bottom-to-top order.
  • Redeal four cards to each tableau pile, all face-up.
  • Repeat play and redeals until all cards are moved to the foundations or no further moves are possible and no redeals remain.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: The game is won when all 52 cards are moved to the foundations, with each foundation built up in suit from Ace to King.
  • Lose: The game is lost (or unwinnable) if, after all allowed redeals, there are still cards remaining in the tableau and no legal moves to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces: Any card may be moved into an empty tableau pile at any time.
  • Redeal Procedure: When redealing, cards are collected from the tableau piles starting with the left-most pile, picking up cards from bottom to top within each pile.
  • Sequence Movement: Only single cards may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved as a group.
  • Card Accessibility: Only the top (uncovered) card of each tableau pile is available for play.
  • Foundation Irreversibility: Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved back to the tableau.

Summary of Unique Features:

  • Dual-direction tableau building (up or down by suit).
  • Any card may fill an empty tableau space.
  • Redeal mechanism: All tableau cards are collected and redealt when stuck, with a limited or unlimited number of redeals depending on the version.
