How to play Rainbow?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Rainbow Solitaire is to move all 52 cards from the deck onto the four foundation piles, building each foundation up in suit from the base card (the first foundation card dealt) in ascending order, wrapping from King back to Ace if necessary, until each foundation contains 13 cards.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Reserve Pile: Deal 13 cards from the deck into a reserve pile. The top card is dealt face-up; the remaining 12 are face-down underneath.
  • Tableau: Deal four cards face-up in a row to form the tableau piles.
  • Foundations: Above the tableau, place one card face-up to start the first foundation pile. This card determines the base rank for all foundation piles; the other three piles are started with cards of the same rank as they become available.
  • Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, placed face-down.
  • Waste: As cards are drawn from the stock, they are placed face-up onto the waste pile.
  • Play Areas Defined:
  • Reserve: Holds 13 cards; only the top card is available for play.
  • Tableau: Four columns; cards are built down in alternating colors.
  • Foundations: Four piles; cards are built up in suit, starting from the base card.
  • Stock: Draw pile for new cards.
  • Waste: Receives cards drawn from the stock; only the top card is playable.

Rainbow Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:
  • Build up in suit, starting from the base card, wrapping from King to Ace if necessary (continuous ranking).
  • All foundation piles must start with the same rank as the initial foundation card.
  • Only cards matching the next rank in sequence and suit may be placed on a foundation.
  • Tableau:
  • Build down in alternating colors (red on black, black on red).
  • Ranking is continuous: King follows Ace, and Ace follows King when building down.
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play.
  • Entire packed sequences (cards in correct descending alternating color order) may be moved as a unit to another tableau pile; partial sequences may not be moved.
  • Reserve:
  • Only the top card is available for play onto the tableau or foundations.
  • Stock & Waste:
  • Turn one card at a time from the stock to the waste.
  • The top card of the waste is available for play to the tableau or foundations.
  • You are allowed two redeals (turn the waste pile face-down to form a new stock when the stock is depleted, up to two times).
  • Empty Tableau Spaces:
  • Must be filled immediately with the top card from the reserve pile; if the reserve is exhausted, fill with the top card from the waste pile.
  • Empty tableau spaces cannot be filled directly from the tableau.

Gameplay:

  1. Initial Moves:
  • Play available cards from the tableau, reserve, or waste onto the foundations or to build tableau sequences.
  1. Building Tableau:
  • Move cards or packed sequences down in alternating colors.
  • Only full sequences may be moved between tableau piles.
  1. Drawing from Stock:
  • When no moves are available, turn one card from the stock to the waste pile.
  • Play the top card of the waste if possible.
  • When the stock is empty, perform a redeal by turning the waste pile face-down to form a new stock; up to two redeals are permitted.
  1. Filling Empty Tableau:
  • Fill immediately from the reserve; if exhausted, fill from the waste.
  1. Stalemate:
  • If no legal moves remain and no redeals are available, the game is lost.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all 52 cards have been successfully moved to the four foundation piles, each built up in suit from the base card in ascending order, wrapping from King to Ace if needed.
  • Losing: The game is lost if no further legal moves are possible and all allowed redeals have been used, leaving cards stranded in the tableau, reserve, stock, or waste.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Circular Building: Both foundation and tableau building are circular; after King comes Ace, and after Ace comes King.
  • Filling Tableau Spaces: Empty tableau spaces must be filled immediately from the reserve; after the reserve is exhausted, fill from the waste. You cannot fill from other tableau piles.
  • Foundation Start: All foundation piles must begin with the same rank as the initial foundation card.
  • Redeal Limit: Only two redeals are allowed; after the second redeal, the waste cannot be recycled into the stock again.
  • Sequence Movement: Only entire packed sequences in correct order may be moved between tableau piles; partial sequences are not permitted.
  • Reserve Exhaustion: Once the reserve pile is empty, only the waste pile can be used to fill empty tableau spaces.
  • No Tableau Fill from Tableau: Empty tableau spaces cannot be filled from cards within the tableau.
