How to play Canfield Rush?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Canfield Rush Solitaire is to move all 52 cards from the deck into the four foundation piles, building each foundation up by suit in ascending order, starting from the initial foundation base card and wrapping from King to Ace as needed.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Reserve Pile: Deal 13 cards face-down in a single pile; reveal only the top card face-up. This pile is called the reserve.
  • Foundation Row: Draw the next card from the deck and place it face-up above the tableau. This card determines the starting rank for all four foundations (e.g., if it is a 6, all foundations will build up from 6).
  • The other three cards of the same rank will be moved to the foundation row as they appear during play.
  • Tableau: Deal the next four cards face-up in a row below the foundations. These are the tableau piles, where most gameplay occurs.
  • Stock: Place the remaining cards face-down to form the stock pile.
  • Waste/Discard Pile: This area will be created during play as cards are drawn from the stock.

Summary of Play Areas:

  • Reserve: 13 cards, only top card face-up.
  • Foundations: Four piles, all start at the same rank, build up by suit.
  • Tableau: Four piles, each starts with one face-up card.
  • Stock: Remaining cards, face-down.
  • Waste/Discard: Receives cards dealt from the stock during play.

Canfield Rush Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations: Build up by suit, starting from the base card (e.g., 6, 7, 8…K, A, 2…5 if 6 is the base).
  • Tableau: Build down in sequence by alternating colors (e.g., red 7 on black 8).
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play.
  • Sequences of cards in correct order and color alternation may be moved as a unit between tableau piles.
  • Reserve: Only the top card is available for play at any time. It can be played to either the tableau or the foundations.
  • Stock & Waste:
  • In Canfield Rush, the number of cards dealt from the stock changes with each pass:
    • First pass: Deal three cards at a time to the waste pile.
    • Second pass: Deal two cards at a time.
    • Final pass: Deal one card at a time.
  • Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play to the tableau or foundations.
  • Empty Tableau Spaces: Automatically filled with the top card from the reserve pile. If the reserve is empty, you may fill the space with the top card of the waste pile at your discretion.

Gameplay:

  1. Move cards to foundations: Whenever possible, move eligible cards from the tableau, reserve, or waste to the foundations.
  2. Build tableau: Move cards between tableau piles in descending order and alternating colors. Move sequences if possible.
  3. Use reserve: Play the top reserve card to either the tableau or foundations whenever legal.
  4. Draw from stock: When no more moves are possible, deal cards from the stock to the waste pile according to the current pass's rules (three, then two, then one at a time).
  • Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play.
  • When the stock is exhausted, gather the waste pile, turn it face-down to form a new stock, and proceed to the next pass with the reduced number of cards per deal.
  1. Fill empty tableau spaces: Immediately fill any empty tableau space with the top reserve card. If the reserve is empty, you may fill the space with the top waste card, but this is optional.
  2. Repeat: Continue this process until all cards are moved to the foundations or no further moves are possible.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won if all 52 cards are built into the four foundations in correct suit sequence, starting from the foundation base card and wrapping through the deck if necessary.
  • Losing/Unwinnable: The game is lost (or at a standstill) if there are no legal moves remaining and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Variable Stock Deal: The defining feature of Canfield Rush is the variable deal size from the stock:
  • First pass: Deal three cards at a time.
  • Second pass: Deal two cards at a time.
  • Third (final) pass: Deal one card at a time.
  • Foundation Wrapping: Foundations build up by suit, wrapping from King to Ace, then 2, and so on, until the starting rank is reached again.
  • Filling Tableau Spaces: If the reserve is empty, filling a tableau space with the top waste card is optional and may be done at any time.
  • Moving Tableau Sequences: Only complete sequences in correct descending order and alternating colors may be moved as a group between tableau piles.
  • Redeals: The game allows for multiple passes through the stock, each with a decreasing number of cards dealt per turn, until the final one-card pass is exhausted.

Note: Canfield Rush Solitaire is a challenging variant, but its variable stock deal makes it more forgiving than standard Canfield, increasing the likelihood of a winnable game.
