How to play Canfield (Gallery Mode)?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Canfield (Gallery Mode) Solitaire is to move all 52 cards from the deck into the four foundation piles, building each pile up in ascending order by suit, starting from a randomly determined base card.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Standard 52-card deck is used.
  • Reserve (also called "heel" or "demon"): Deal 13 cards face down in a single pile; turn the top card face up. Only this top card is available for play.
  • Foundations: Deal one card face up above the tableau; this is the base card for all four foundation piles. The other three foundation piles start empty and must be started with cards of the same rank as the base card when they become available.
  • Tableau: Deal four cards face up in a row below the foundations; each forms the starting card of a tableau pile.
  • Stock: The remaining 34 cards are placed face down as the stock pile.
  • Waste: As play proceeds, cards from the stock are dealt to a waste pile, face up. Only the top card of the waste is available for play.

Summary of Areas:

  • Reserve: 13 cards (top card face up)
  • Foundations: 4 piles (one starts with a base card, others empty)
  • Tableau: 4 piles (one card each, all face up)
  • Stock: Remaining cards, face down
  • Waste: Created during play, face up

Canfield (Gallery Mode) Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations: Build up by suit from the base card, wrapping from King to Ace if necessary, until each foundation contains all 13 cards of its suit.
  • Tableau: Build down in alternating colors (red on black or black on red), one rank at a time. For example, a red 7 can be placed on a black 8.
  • Reserve: Only the top card is available for play. It can be moved to the tableau or to a foundation, following the building rules.
  • Stock & Waste: Cards are dealt from the stock to the waste in packets of three, face up. Only the top card of the waste is available for play onto the tableau or foundations.
  • Moving Cards: You may move single cards or sequences of cards within the tableau, provided the sequence is in descending order and alternating colors.
  • Empty Tableau Piles: When a tableau pile is empty, it must be filled immediately with the top card from the reserve. If the reserve is empty, fill the space with the top card from the waste or stock.
  • Redeals: When the stock is exhausted, the waste pile is turned over (not shuffled) to form a new stock. Unlimited redeals are allowed in most versions.

Gameplay:

  1. Play Available Cards: Move eligible cards from the tableau, reserve, or waste to the foundations or to other tableau piles, following the building rules.
  2. Deal from Stock: When no more moves are available, deal three cards from the stock to the waste pile. Only the top card of the waste is playable.
  3. Use Reserve: The top card of the reserve is always available for play. If a tableau pile becomes empty, fill it immediately with the top reserve card.
  4. Move Sequences: Move sequences of cards within the tableau if they are in descending, alternating color order.
  5. Redeal: When the stock runs out, turn over the waste pile to form a new stock. Repeat as needed.
  6. Continue: Repeat the above steps until all cards are moved to the foundations or no more legal moves are possible.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: The game is won when all 52 cards are successfully moved to the foundation piles, each built up in suit from the base card to complete the sequence.
  • Lose: The game is lost if no further legal moves are possible and not all cards have been moved to the foundations. Due to the challenging nature of Canfield, most games end in a loss.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Tableau Spaces: If a tableau pile is emptied, it must be filled immediately with the top card from the reserve. If the reserve is depleted, fill the space with the top card from the waste or stock.
  • Foundation Base Card: All foundation piles must start with a card of the same rank as the initial base card. For example, if the base card is a 6, all foundations must be built starting from a 6.
  • Sequence Movement: You may move either a single card or a complete sequence of cards within the tableau, as long as the sequence is in descending order and alternates colors.
  • Redeals: Unlimited redeals are allowed; when the stock is exhausted, turn the waste pile face down to form a new stock, preserving card order.
  • Wrap-Around Building: Both the foundations and tableau allow for "turning the corner," meaning you can build from King to Ace (and vice versa if wrapping is allowed in your version).
  • No Shuffling on Redeal: When redealing, do not shuffle the waste; simply turn it over to form a new stock.
