How to play Challenge FreeCell?

Game Objective:

The primary objective of Challenge FreeCell Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and free cells to the four foundation piles, building each foundation by suit in ascending order from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck. No jokers are used.
  • Dealing: Deal all 52 cards face-up into eight tableau piles:
  • The first four tableau piles each receive seven cards.
  • The remaining four tableau piles each receive six cards.
  • Play Areas:
  • Tableau: Eight piles in the center, where the main gameplay occurs.
  • Foundations: Four empty piles, one for each suit, where cards are built up from Ace to King.
  • Free Cells: Four empty cells above the tableau, used as temporary storage for single cards.
  • Card Orientation: All cards are dealt face-up. There are no face-down cards in any area.

Challenge FreeCell Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement Principles:
  • Only one card may be moved at a time, unless a sequence is moved using available empty free cells and/or empty tableau piles (see "Supermoves" below).
  • Cards can be moved:
    • From tableau to tableau.
    • From tableau to a free cell.
    • From a free cell to tableau or foundation.
    • From tableau or free cell to foundation.
  • Building Sequences:
  • Tableau: Build down in alternating colors (red on black or black on red).
  • Foundations: Build up by suit, from Ace to King.
  • Moving Sequences:
  • You may move a sequence of cards in proper order (descending, alternating colors) from one tableau pile to another, but only if there are enough empty free cells and/or empty tableau piles to facilitate the move.
  • The maximum number of cards you can move as a group is determined by the formula:
    [ \text{Maximum cards} = (\text{Number of empty free cells} + 1) \times 2^{\text{Number of empty tableau piles}} ] For example, with two empty free cells and one empty tableau pile, you may move up to ( (2+1) \times 2^1 = 6 ) cards as a sequence.
  • Free Cells:
  • Any single card may be moved to an empty free cell.
  • Only one card may occupy each free cell at any time.

Gameplay:

  • Player Actions:
  • Move cards between tableau piles, free cells, and foundation piles as allowed by the rules above.
  • Use free cells to temporarily store cards and facilitate the movement of sequences.
  • Prioritize moving Aces and low cards to the foundation piles early to free up space and create more move opportunities.
  • Introducing New Cards:
  • All cards are dealt at the start; no new cards are introduced during play.
  • No Legal Moves:
  • If no legal moves remain (i.e., no cards can be moved to the tableau, free cells, or foundations), the game is lost or becomes unwinnable.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition:
  • The game is won when all cards are successfully moved to the four foundation piles, built up by suit from Ace through King.
  • Losing/Unwinnable Condition:
  • The game is lost or unwinnable if no further legal moves are possible and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles:
  • Any single card or a valid descending, alternating-color sequence may be moved to an empty tableau pile, provided you have enough free cells and/or empty tableau piles to facilitate the move.
  • Supermoves (Multiple Card Moves):
  • While only one card is physically moved at a time, a sequence of cards can be moved as a group if there are enough empty free cells and/or empty tableau piles to make the move legal (see formula above).
  • Restrictions:
  • Only one card may occupy each free cell at a time.
  • Only the top card of a tableau pile or a card in a free cell may be moved at any given time.
  • No Stock or Redeal:
  • There is no stock pile, reserve, or redeal in this variant. All cards are visible and in play from the beginning.
