How to play Brazilian?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Brazilian Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the foundation piles, building each foundation up in ascending order by suit, starting with Ace and ending with King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Used: A standard 52-card deck is used.
  • Tableau: Ten tableau piles are created. Deal one card face-up to the first pile, two cards face-up to the second pile, three to the third, and so on, up to ten cards in the tenth pile. Only the top card of each pile is face-up; the rest are face-down.
  • Stock: The remaining cards after the tableau setup form the stock pile, placed face-down in the upper left corner.
  • Foundations: Four foundation piles are reserved, one for each suit. These start empty and are built up from Ace to King.
  • Play Areas Defined:
  • Tableau: The main field of play, consisting of ten piles.
  • Stock: The deck used to introduce new cards during play.
  • Foundations: The target piles where cards are built up by suit.

Brazilian Solitaire Rules:

  • Building Sequences:
  • Cards in the tableau are built down in sequence by alternating colors (e.g., a red 9 on a black 10).
  • Only the top face-up card of each tableau pile is available for play.
  • Sequences of cards in correct descending order and alternating colors can be moved together as a unit.
  • Moving Cards:
  • Cards can be moved from tableau to tableau, provided they follow the descending/alternating color rule.
  • Only Kings or valid descending sequences starting with a King can be moved into empty tableau spaces.
  • Cards are moved to foundations in ascending order by suit, starting with Ace and ending with King.
  • Stock Usage:
  • When no moves are possible, deal one card from the stock to each tableau pile.
  • The stock is depleted as cards are dealt out to the tableau.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • Move available cards within the tableau according to the descending/alternating color rule.
  • Move cards to the foundation piles whenever possible.
  • When no moves are available, deal one card from the stock to each tableau pile, covering the existing cards.
  • Continue moving cards and dealing from the stock until the stock is exhausted or no more moves are possible.
  • Introducing New Cards:
  • The stock introduces new cards by dealing one face-up card to each tableau pile when requested.
  • No Legal Moves:
  • If no moves are possible and the stock is empty, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The game is won when all cards are successfully built up in the foundation piles by suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing Condition: The game is lost or unwinnable if there are no legal moves remaining and the stock is exhausted, leaving cards in the tableau that cannot be moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Spaces:
  • Only a King or a valid descending sequence starting with a King may be placed in an empty tableau pile.
  • Moving Sequences:
  • Full or partial sequences of cards in descending order and alternating colors can be moved as a unit between tableau piles.
  • Stock Dealing:
  • When dealing from the stock, one card is placed on top of each tableau pile, regardless of whether the pile is empty or not.
  • Face-Down Cards:
  • When a face-up card is moved from a tableau pile, immediately turn the next card in that pile face-up.
  • Game Variants:
  • Some digital implementations may allow for a limited number of re-deals or have slight variations in tableau size, but the above rules represent the standard format.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main play area with ten piles where most card manipulation occurs.
  • Foundation: The four piles where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Stock: The pile of undealt cards used to introduce new cards into play.
