How to play Brown Recluse?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Brown Recluse Solitaire is to build complete sequences of thirteen cards, arranged in descending order and all of the same suit, from King down to Ace, within the tableau piles. Once a full sequence is formed, it is removed from play. The game is won when all cards have been organized and removed in this way.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Two standard 52-card decks are used, totaling 104 cards.
  • Tableau: There are ten tableau piles. Each tableau pile is initially dealt one card, all face up.
  • Stock: The remaining 94 cards form the stock pile, which is placed face down.
  • Waste: There is one waste pile, initially empty, where cards from the stock are dealt face up.
  • Foundations: There are no separate foundation piles; completed sequences are simply removed from the tableau.

Key Play Areas:

  • Tableau: The main area where cards are built and sequences are formed.
  • Stock: Supplies additional cards to the waste pile.
  • Waste: Receives cards from the stock; the top card is always available for play.

Brown Recluse Solitaire Rules:

  • Building on Tableau:
  • Cards are built down in rank, regardless of suit (for example, a 7♣ can be placed on an 8♦, 8♠, etc.).
  • Wrap-around is allowed: An Ace can be built upon by a King.
  • Moving Sequences: Only sequences of cards that are in descending order and of the same suit (e.g., 9♠, 8♠, 7♠…) can be moved together as a unit.
  • Moving Cards:
  • Any single card or valid sequence can be moved onto another tableau pile if the top card of the destination is one rank higher than the card or sequence being moved.
  • Empty Tableau Piles:
  • When a tableau pile becomes empty, it is immediately filled from the waste pile.
  • If the waste is empty, the space is filled from the stock.
  • If both waste and stock are empty, only a King may be placed in an empty tableau space.
  • Stock and Waste:
  • The stock deals one card at a time, face up, onto the waste pile.
  • Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play.
  • There is only one pass through the stock; no redeals are permitted.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • Move cards or valid sequences among tableau piles according to the building rules.
  • When no more moves are available or desired, deal one card from the stock to the waste pile.
  • Use the top card of the waste pile as needed.
  • Whenever a complete, in-suit sequence from King to Ace is formed on a tableau pile, remove it from play.
  • Introducing New Cards:
  • New cards enter play by dealing from the stock to the waste pile, from which they can then be played to the tableau.
  • Empty tableau spaces are automatically filled from the waste, then the stock, then with Kings if both are empty.
  • No More Legal Moves:
  • If you cannot make any more valid moves and the stock is exhausted, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition:
  • The game is won when all cards have been organized into complete, in-suit, descending sequences from King to Ace and removed from the tableau.
  • Losing/Unwinnable Condition:
  • The game is lost or unwinnable if no further legal moves are possible and the stock is exhausted, with incomplete sequences remaining on the tableau.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces:
  • Empty tableau spaces are filled automatically in this order: first from the waste pile, then from the stock pile, and finally, if both are empty, only a King may be placed in the space.
  • Wrap-Around Building:
  • Building is allowed "around the corner," meaning a King may be placed on an Ace and vice versa, facilitating continuous play.
  • Sequence Movement Restriction:
  • Only sequences built down by the same suit (e.g., 10♠, 9♠, 8♠…) can be moved together as a group; mixed-suit sequences cannot be moved as a unit.
  • No Redeals:
  • There is only one pass through the stock; once depleted, no further cards can be dealt to the waste.
  • Waste Pile Usage:
  • Only the top card of the waste pile may be played; it remains available until used or until the waste is replenished from the stock.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The primary play area where cards are arranged and sequences are built.
  • Stock: The pile of face-down cards from which new cards are dealt to the waste.
  • Waste: The pile that receives cards from the stock; only the top card is available for play.
