How to play Bunker?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Bunker Solitaire is to move all cards from the stock and waste onto the tableau piles, resulting in both the stock and waste being completely empty.

Setup & Layout:

  • Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Tableau: Deal eight tableau piles with one card each, all cards face up.
  • Stock: Place the remaining cards face down to form the stock pile.
  • Waste: Create a single waste pile, initially empty.
  • Key Play Areas:
  • Tableau: Eight piles where most gameplay occurs.
  • Stock: Holds undealt cards; supplies new cards during play.
  • Waste: Receives cards dealt from the stock; only the top card is accessible.
  • All tableau cards are dealt face up; stock cards are face down until played to the waste.

Bunker Solitaire Rules:

  • Tableau Building: Cards are built up by rank, regardless of suit (e.g., any 8 may be placed on any 7). Sequences do not require matching suits or alternating colors.
  • Moving Cards:
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile can be moved.
  • Any card may be moved to an empty tableau pile.
  • Stock and Waste:
  • When tapped, the stock deals one card face up to the waste.
  • Only the top card of the waste pile can be moved to a tableau.
  • Restrictions:
  • Once a King is placed on a tableau, no cards can be built on top of it.
  • Aces should be moved to empty tableau piles promptly and built upon.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:
  • Move any eligible card (top card of tableau or waste) onto a tableau pile, following the building rules.
  • Move any card to an empty tableau pile.
  • Tap the stock to deal one card face up to the waste.
  • Cards from the waste may be moved to the tableau if legal.
  • Play continues until no further legal moves are available or the objective is met.
  • If no moves are possible, the player may continue to deal cards from the stock to the waste until the stock is depleted.
  • When the stock is empty and no more moves are possible, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The player wins if all cards are moved onto the tableau piles, leaving both the stock and waste empty.
  • Losing: The game is lost (or unwinnable) if no further legal moves are possible and cards remain in the stock or waste.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableaus: Any card may be moved to an empty tableau pile at any time.
  • Kings: Once a King is placed on a tableau, it becomes a "blocker"—no cards can be built on top of it.
  • Aces: Move Aces to empty tableau piles early and build on them immediately for optimal play.
  • Waste Management: Leave Kings in the waste until necessary, since they cannot be built upon once placed on the tableau.
  • Game Difficulty: The odds of winning are low (approximately 5%), and success is primarily determined by player skill.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The primary area of play, consisting of eight piles where cards are built up by rank.
  • Stock: The pile containing undealt cards; supplies new cards to the waste.
  • Waste: The pile where cards are dealt from the stock; only the top card is accessible for play.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the objective of Bunker Solitaire?

The objective is to move all cards to the foundation piles by building sequences in the tableau and utilizing empty spaces to access more cards.

  2. How do you set up Bunker Solitaire?

Deal eight tableau piles with one card each, all face up. The remaining cards form the stock, which you draw from during play.

  3. What are the rules for moving cards in the tableau?

You can add a card onto a tableau pile if it is one rank higher than the top card, regardless of suit. Only single cards can be moved at a time.

  4. How do you use the stock and waste piles in Bunker Solitaire?

Draw cards from the stock to the waste pile. Only the top card of the waste can be played to the tableau. When the stock is empty, you cannot reuse the waste.

  5. What happens when a tableau pile becomes empty?

Any card can be moved into an empty tableau space, which is key to freeing up and accessing more cards.

  6. Are suits important when building on tableau piles?

No, suits are ignored when building on tableau piles; only the rank matters.

  7. Can you move groups of cards or only single cards?

You may only move single cards at a time in Bunker Solitaire, not groups or sequences.

  8. Is there a strategy for handling Aces and Kings?

Move Aces to empty tableau spaces as soon as possible to start building on them. Leave Kings in the waste pile until needed to avoid blocking moves.

  9. Can you go through the stock more than once?

No, you can only go through the stock once in Bunker Solitaire. Once the stock is depleted, play continues with the tableau and waste only.
