How to play Carousel?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Carousel Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and waste (garbage) piles onto the foundation piles, organizing each foundation by suit in ascending order from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Used: Standard 52-card deck (no Jokers).
  • Tableau: Eight tableau piles are created. Each pile is dealt four cards face-up, for a total of 32 cards in the tableau.
  • Stock: The remaining 20 cards form the stock pile, placed face-down.
  • Garbage (Waste): One garbage pile is used to collect cards dealt from the stock.
  • Foundations: Four foundation piles, one for each suit, are created. Foundations start empty.
  • Face Orientation: All tableau cards are dealt face-up. Stock cards are face-down until drawn; waste cards are face-up.

Key Play Areas:

  • Tableau: The main area where cards are arranged and manipulated.
  • Foundations: Target piles for building complete suit sequences.
  • Stock: Supplies new cards into play.
  • Garbage (Waste): Temporary holding area for cards drawn from the stock.

Carousel Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement Principles:

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play.

  • Cards can be moved from tableau or garbage to either another tableau pile or to the foundations.

  • Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved together.

  • Building Sequences:

  • Tableau piles are built downward by suit: a card may be placed on a tableau pile if it is exactly one rank lower and of the same suit as the top card of that pile (e.g., a 7♦ can be placed on an 8♦).

  • Foundations are built upward by suit, starting with Ace and progressing to King.

  • Moving Cards:

  • Any free (uncovered) tableau card or the top card of the garbage pile can be played onto a foundation or another tableau pile, subject to the building rules above.

  • Cards cannot be removed from the foundation once placed.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:

  • Players may move eligible cards between tableau piles or to the foundations, following the building rules.

  • When no moves are available, the player may click the stock to deal one card face-up to the garbage pile.

  • The top card of the garbage pile can be played onto tableau or foundation piles, if legal.

  • Introducing New Cards:

  • Only one pass through the stock is permitted; each click deals one card to the garbage pile.

  • When the stock is depleted, no further cards can be drawn.

  • No Legal Moves:

  • If no legal moves remain and the stock is exhausted, the game ends in a loss.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win Condition: The game is won when all cards are moved to the foundation piles, with each foundation containing a complete suit from Ace to King.
  • Loss Condition: The game is lost if the player exhausts all possible moves and cannot complete the foundations, either because the stock is empty or no cards can be legally played.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Slots:

  • When a tableau pile becomes empty, it is immediately refilled with four cards from the garbage pile.

  • If the garbage pile is empty, four cards are drawn from the stock to fill the empty tableau slot.

  • If both the garbage and stock are empty, any card may be used to fill the tableau's empty spaces.

  • Restrictions:

  • Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be transferred.

  • Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved again.

  • There is only one pass through the stock; no redeals are allowed.

  • Exceptions:

  • If multiple tableau piles become empty simultaneously, each is filled in turn using the garbage or stock, as described above.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main area of play, consisting of eight piles where cards are manipulated.
  • Foundation: Target piles for building complete suit sequences from Ace to King.
  • Stock: The face-down pile supplying new cards into play.
  • Garbage (Waste): The face-up pile where cards from the stock are placed and may be played from.
