How to play Castile?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Castile Solitaire is to build all four foundation piles from Ace up to King in the same suit, using a standard 52-card deck.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Tableau: Deal 10 tableau piles with 5 cards each, all face up.
  • Reserve Cells: Place the remaining 2 cards into two separate reserve cells above the tableau, also face up.
  • Foundations: Leave room for four foundation piles, which will be built up in suit from Ace to King as the game progresses.

Key Play Areas:

  • Tableau: 10 piles where cards are built up or down by suit.
  • Reserve Cells: 2 cells, each holding a single card that is available for play.
  • Foundations: 4 piles, one for each suit, built from Ace to King.

Castile Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement: Only one card may be moved at a time.
  • Available Cards: The top card of each tableau pile and each card in a reserve cell are available for play.
  • Building on Foundations: Foundations are built up by suit, starting with Ace and ending with King (e.g., Ace, 2, 3, …, King of Diamonds).
  • Building on Tableau: Tableau piles can be built either up or down by suit (e.g., 8♠ onto 9♠ or 9♠ onto 8♠).
  • Reserve Cell Rules: Each reserve cell may contain only one card. When a reserve cell is empty, it may be filled with the top card of any tableau pile.
  • Empty Tableau Piles: When a tableau pile becomes empty, it may be filled with the top card of any tableau pile or a card from a reserve cell.
  • No Redeal: There is no stock or redeal in this game; all cards are in play from the start.

Gameplay:

  • Typical Sequence of Actions:
    • Move available Aces to start foundation piles as soon as they appear.
    • Build tableau piles up or down in suit by moving single cards.
    • Move cards from reserve cells to tableau or foundations when possible.
    • Fill empty tableau piles or reserve cells as permitted by the rules.
  • Introducing New Cards: All cards are dealt face up at the start; no new cards are introduced during play.
  • No Legal Moves: If no further moves are possible and not all foundations are complete, the game ends in a loss.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all four foundation piles are built from Ace to King in their respective suits.
  • Losing: The game is lost if you run out of legal moves before completing all foundation piles.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Spaces:
    • Reserve Cells: May be filled with the top card from any tableau pile when empty.
    • Tableau Piles: May be filled with the top card from any tableau pile or a card from a reserve cell when empty.
  • Sequence Movement: Only single cards may be moved at a time. Some digital implementations may allow moving partial or full sequences if enough empty tableau and reserve cells exist, as a shortcut for manual moves.
  • No Stock/Draw Pile: All cards are in play from the beginning; there is no draw pile or redeal.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main area of play where cards are arranged in piles and built up or down by suit.
  • Foundation: The target piles built up from Ace to King in suit.
  • Reserve Cell: A holding area for a single card, available for play.
