The objective of Circle Eight Solitaire is to build all cards onto eight tableau piles in ascending order by rank, regardless of suit, starting from Ace and progressing through King. The game is won when all 52 cards have been successfully placed onto the tableau piles in the correct sequence.
Circle Eight Solitaire uses a standard 52-card deck. The setup consists of the following components:
Tableau Piles: Eight tableau piles are arranged in a circle formation, with each pile initially containing one card dealt face-up. All cards are dealt face-up at the start of the game, and cards within each pile are splayed downward to display the sequence.
Waste Pile: After the initial eight cards are dealt to the tableau piles, the remaining 44 cards form the waste pile (also called the stock or draw pile). Cards are drawn from this pile during gameplay.
Play Area: Cards are played exclusively from the waste pile onto the tableau piles. Once a card is placed on a tableau pile, it cannot be moved to a different pile.
The fundamental rules governing Circle Eight Solitaire are as follows:
Card Availability: Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play at any given time.
Building Sequences: Cards are played from the waste pile onto the tableau piles in ascending order by rank, regardless of suit. A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it is one rank higher than the current top card of that pile. For example, if a tableau pile currently shows a 5, only a 6 can be played on top of it. After a King is played to a pile, that pile is complete and no further cards can be added to it.
Permanent Placement: Once a card is played to a tableau pile, it cannot be moved or removed. The card remains in that pile for the duration of the game.
Pile Capacity: A tableau pile can contain any number of cards, limited only by the total number of cards in the deck.
Turn Sequence: On each turn, the player examines the top card of the waste pile. If this card is one rank higher than the top card of any tableau pile, the player may play it to that pile. If no legal play exists, the player draws the next card from the waste pile, which becomes the new top card available for play.
Introducing New Cards: Cards enter play exclusively from the waste pile. The player progresses through the waste pile one card at a time, with each card becoming available for play until it is either played to a tableau pile or passed over in favor of examining the next card.
No More Legal Moves: When the player reaches the end of the waste pile and no further cards can be played, the game ends. The waste pile is not reshuffled or redealt; there is no redeal option in Circle Eight Solitaire.
Winning Condition: The game is won when all 52 cards have been successfully placed onto the eight tableau piles in ascending order. At the end of a won game, each tableau pile will contain cards ranked from Ace through King of various suits, with the King as the top card of each pile.
Losing Condition: The game is lost when the player reaches the end of the waste pile with cards remaining that cannot be played to any tableau pile. This occurs when the top card of the waste pile cannot be played to any of the eight tableau piles because it is not one rank higher than any current pile top card.
Empty Piles: Once a tableau pile is completed with a King as the top card, that pile remains in place for the remainder of the game. No new cards can be added to a completed pile.
Suit Independence: Unlike many solitaire variants, Circle Eight Solitaire does not require cards to match by suit. Any card of the correct rank can be played to any tableau pile, making this variant more forgiving than suit-based solitaire games.
No Temporary Storage: Circle Eight Solitaire does not include reserve cells or free cells for temporary card storage. Cards must be played directly from the waste pile to the tableau piles or the game continues to the next card in the waste pile.
