How to play Cleopatra?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Cleopatra Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Used: Two standard 52-card decks are combined, totaling 104 cards.
  • Foundations: Eight foundation piles, each to be built up by suit starting with an Ace.
  • Tableau: Thirteen tableau piles are created. Cards are dealt to each tableau pile; all cards are placed face-up.
  • Stock: The remaining cards after dealing to the tableau are placed face-down in the stock pile.
  • Waste: There is one waste pile, which receives cards dealt from the stock. Cards in the waste are face-up and only the top card is available for play.

Key Play Areas Defined:

  • Foundation: Destination piles for building up by suit.
  • Tableau: Main play area for building down by suit.
  • Stock: Source of undealt cards, drawn one at a time.
  • Waste: Temporary holding pile for cards drawn from the stock.

Cleopatra Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:

  • Each foundation starts with an Ace.

  • Cards are built up by the same suit in ascending order (e.g., 2♠ on Ace♠, then 3♠, etc.).

  • Cards may be moved between foundations if it maintains proper order and suit.

  • Tableau:

  • Cards are built down by the same suit in descending order (e.g., 7♥ on 8♥, then 6♥, etc.).

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for movement.

  • Any card may be moved to an empty tableau pile.

  • Stock & Waste:

  • The stock deals one card at a time, face-up, to the waste pile.

  • Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play.

  • Movement Conditions:

  • Cards can be moved from tableau or waste to foundations if they continue the suit sequence.

  • Cards can be moved between tableau piles if they follow the descending, same-suit rule.

  • Any card can fill an empty tableau space.

Gameplay:

  • Sequence of Actions:

  • Move available cards from tableau or waste to foundations following ascending, same-suit order.

  • Move cards between tableau piles following descending, same-suit order.

  • When no moves are available, deal one card from the stock to the waste pile.

  • Continue making legal moves until no further moves are possible or the game is won.

  • Introducing New Cards:

  • Cards are introduced into play by drawing one card at a time from the stock to the waste pile.

  • The top card of the waste is always available for play.

  • No Legal Moves:

  • If no legal moves remain and the stock is depleted, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all cards are moved to the eight foundation piles, completing each suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing/Unwinnable: The game is lost if no legal moves remain and the stock is exhausted, with cards still left in tableau or waste.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Spaces: Any card may be moved into an empty tableau pile, regardless of suit or rank.
  • Foundation Flexibility: Cards can be moved between foundations as long as suit and sequence rules are maintained.
  • Waste Management: Only the top card of the waste is playable at any time.
  • No Redeals: Once the stock is depleted, no redeals are permitted.

Unique Restrictions:

  • Building in the tableau and foundations must strictly follow suit sequences.
  • Only single cards (not sequences) may be moved at a time.

Edge Case Handling:

  • If all tableau piles become empty, each may be filled with any available card.
  • If the stock and waste are empty and no moves are possible, the game is over.
