How to play Corners?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Corners Solitaire is to move all cards from the deck to the foundation piles, building each foundation up in suit from its base card, with the sequence wrapping from King to Ace if necessary.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Standard 52-card deck (no jokers).
  • Foundations: Four piles, one in each corner of the layout. Each foundation starts with a base card (usually the four cards initially placed in the corners).
  • Reserve: Five piles arranged in a cross pattern in the center of the layout. These serve as holding areas for cards but do not allow building within the reserve piles.
  • Stock: The remaining cards are placed face-down to form the stock pile.
  • Waste: Cards drawn from the stock are placed face-up in a single waste pile.

Dealing:

  • Place one card face-up in each of the four corners to serve as the base of each foundation.
  • Deal one card face-up to each of the five reserve piles in the cross pattern.
  • The rest of the cards form the face-down stock pile.

Corners Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:
  • Cards are built up in suit (e.g., 4♣, 5♣, 6♣, …).
  • The sequence is continuous: after King, Ace can be played, and vice versa.
  • Reserve:
  • No building is allowed in reserve piles.
  • Only the top card of each reserve pile is available for play to the foundations.
  • Stock and Waste:
  • Cards are drawn one at a time from the stock to the waste pile.
  • The top card of the waste pile is available for play to the foundations.
  • Redeals:
  • When the stock is exhausted, you may gather the waste pile, turn it over (without shuffling), and use it as the new stock.
  • Two redeals are permitted, for a total of three passes through the deck.

Gameplay:

  • On your turn, you may move any available card (top card of a reserve pile or the waste pile) to a foundation if it fits the building sequence (next in suit).
  • If a reserve pile becomes empty, it is immediately filled with the top card from the stock.
  • Draw cards from the stock one at a time to the waste pile as needed.
  • Continue building on the foundations whenever possible.
  • When no further moves are possible and the stock is exhausted, perform a redeal if you have any left.
  • Play continues until all cards are placed on the foundations or no further moves are possible after the final redeal.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: All 52 cards are successfully moved to the four foundation piles, each built up in suit from its base card, wrapping King to Ace as needed.
  • Lose: The game is lost if, after all allowed redeals, not all cards have been moved to the foundations and no further legal moves are possible.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Reserve Piles: Any time a reserve pile is emptied, it must be filled immediately with the next card from the stock. If the stock is empty, the space remains vacant until the next redeal.
  • Continuous Building: Building on the foundations is continuous, so you may play an Ace after a King and vice versa.
  • No Building in Reserve: You cannot move cards between reserve piles or build sequences within them; only the top card of each reserve pile is available for play.
  • Redeal Limit: You may only redeal twice (for a total of three passes through the deck). After the final redeal, play continues until no moves remain.

Definitions of Key Terms:

  • Foundation: A pile where cards are built up in suit, starting from a base card.
  • Reserve: Holding piles in the center of the layout; only the top card is available for play.
  • Stock: The pile of undealt cards, face-down.
  • Waste: The face-up pile where cards from the stock are placed, with only the top card available for play.
