How to play Czarina?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Czarina Solitaire is to move all 52 cards from the tableau and stock onto the four foundation piles, building each foundation up by suit from the initial starting rank through a complete sequence, wrapping from King to Ace if necessary.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Standard 52-card deck is used.
  • Foundations: Four foundation piles. The first card dealt to the top-left corner becomes the initial base card for all foundations; the other three foundations are started with the same rank as the first when those cards appear.
  • Tableau: Five tableau piles, each with one card dealt face up.
  • Stock: Remaining cards form a face-down stock pile.
  • Waste: One waste pile, initially empty, receives cards dealt from the stock.
  • Face-Up/Face-Down: All tableau and foundation cards are dealt face up; the stock is face down.

Key Play Areas Defined:

  • Foundations: Build up by suit, starting from the initial rank.
  • Tableau: Five piles, build down by rank, regardless of suit.
  • Stock: Supplies cards to the waste pile.
  • Waste: Holds cards available for play after being drawn from the stock.

Czarina Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundation Building: Build up by suit, starting from the initial base card (e.g., if a 2 is the base, build 2-3-4…K-A). Foundations wrap around from King to Ace (i.e., Ace may follow King).
  • Empty Foundation Spaces: May only be filled with a card of the same rank as the initial base card.
  • Tableau Building: Build down by rank, regardless of suit (e.g., any Queen may be placed on any King).
  • Movable Cards: Only the top card of each tableau or waste pile may be moved.
  • Empty Tableau Spaces: Automatically filled from the stock; if stock is exhausted, any single card may be moved to an empty tableau.
  • Stock & Waste: Stock deals one card at a time to the waste pile. No redeals; once the stock is empty, it cannot be replenished.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • Move eligible cards from tableau or waste to foundations or tableau piles according to building rules.
  • When no moves are possible, deal one card from the stock to the waste pile.
  • Continue making moves and dealing from the stock until it is depleted.
  • Introducing New Cards:
  • Tableau spaces are filled automatically from the stock when empty.
  • If the stock is empty, any single card may be moved to an empty tableau space.
  • No Legal Moves:
  • If no moves are possible and the stock is depleted, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all 52 cards are placed onto the four foundations, each built up by suit from the starting rank and wrapping from King to Ace if needed.
  • Losing/Unwinnable State: The game is lost if no further legal moves are possible and the stock is exhausted, leaving cards stranded in the tableau or waste.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces: Automatically filled from the stock. If stock is empty, any card may be moved to the empty space.
  • Filling Empty Foundation Spaces: Only cards of the same rank as the initial base card may fill empty foundation spaces.
  • Sequence Wrapping: Foundations allow "around-the-corner" building (Ace may follow King).
  • No Redeals: Stock is passed through only once; after depletion, no further cards can be drawn.
  • Tableau Movement: Only the top card of each tableau or waste pile is movable; sequences cannot be moved as a group.
  • Waste Pile: Holds cards from the stock; only the top card is available for play.
