How to play Darwin?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Darwin Solitaire is to build all cards onto the 12 foundation piles, each in ascending order by suit from Ace to King, using all cards in play.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Darwin Solitaire uses a standard 3-deck pack (156 cards).
  • Tableau: Deal 10 tableau piles with 8 cards each, all cards dealt face up and splayed downward so all cards are visible.
  • Foundations: There are 12 foundation piles (one for each suit in a three-deck game), placed above the tableau.
  • Stock: The remaining cards (if any, after dealing the tableau) form the stock pile and are placed at the bottom left of the layout.
  • Key Play Areas:
  • Tableau: 10 piles where most building occurs.
  • Foundations: 12 piles to build up each suit.
  • Stock: Source of additional cards during gameplay.

Darwin Solitaire Rules:

  • Tableau Building:
  • Cards are built down in suit within the tableau (e.g., 8♠ can be placed on 9♠).
  • Only one card can be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved together.
  • Foundation Building:
  • Foundations are built up in suit from Ace to King (e.g., Ace♣, 2♣, 3♣, …, King♣).
  • Card Movement:
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile may be moved, either to another tableau pile (if it continues the descending in-suit sequence) or to a foundation pile (if it continues the ascending in-suit sequence).
  • Cards from the stock are played one at a time onto the tableau or directly to the foundations, following the same building rules.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:
  • Move the top card of any tableau pile to another tableau pile (if it is one rank lower and of the same suit).
  • Move the top card of any tableau pile to a foundation pile (if it is the next in ascending order and of the same suit).
  • Draw the top card from the stock and play it to the tableau or a foundation pile as allowed.
  • If a tableau pile becomes empty, it may be filled with any card.
  • Play continues until no further moves are possible or all cards are built onto the foundations.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: The game is won when all 156 cards have been moved to the 12 foundation piles, each pile containing a complete Ace-to-King sequence in its suit.
  • Lose: The game is lost if no further legal moves are possible and not all cards have been built onto the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Piles: Any card may be moved into an empty tableau pile, not just Kings.
  • Stock Run-Out: Once the stock is depleted, no further cards can be drawn; play continues only with cards available in the tableau.
  • No Sequence Moves: Only single cards may be moved at a time, not sequences.
  • Multiple Decks: Because Darwin Solitaire uses three decks, there are multiple copies of each card and suit, and 12 foundation piles (one for each suit per deck).

Summary of Unique Features:

  • Three decks and 12 foundations distinguish Darwin Solitaire from standard variants.
  • All tableau cards are face up from the start, providing full information.
  • Building is strictly by suit both up (foundations) and down (tableau).
  • No sequence moves—only single cards may be moved at a time.
  • Any card may fill empty tableau spaces.

These rules define the unique gameplay and strategic considerations of Darwin Solitaire.
