The primary goal in Dieppe Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau, stock, and waste to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up by suit from Ace to King.
Key Play Areas Defined:
Foundations:
Each foundation pile must start with an Ace.
Foundations are built up by suit in ascending order (Ace, 2, 3, …, King).
Only cards of the same suit may be placed on top of each other in a foundation.
Tableau:
Tableau piles are built down by rank, but regardless of suit (e.g., any Queen can be placed on any King).
Sequences of cards built down by rank (regardless of suit) may be moved together as a group.
Any card or sequence may be moved into an empty tableau pile.
Stock and Waste:
Cards are drawn from the stock one at a time and placed face up on the waste pile.
Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play to the tableau or foundations.
Card Movement:
Cards may be moved from tableau or waste to a foundation if they follow suit and sequence.
Cards or sequences may be moved between tableau piles if they follow descending rank, regardless of suit.
Empty tableau piles may be filled with any card or sequence.
On each turn, the player may:
Move eligible cards from tableau or waste to the foundations.
Move cards or sequences between tableau piles, building down by rank (regardless of suit).
Fill any empty tableau pile with any card or sequence.
Draw one card from the stock and place it face up on the waste pile.
Use the top card of the waste pile for moves to tableau or foundation.
Introducing New Cards:
Cards are introduced into play by drawing from the stock to the waste, one at a time.
There is no redeal; once the stock is exhausted, no more cards can be drawn.
No Legal Moves:
If no moves are possible and the stock is depleted, the game ends.
Winning Condition:
The game is won when all 104 cards are successfully moved to the eight foundations, each built up by suit from Ace to King.
Losing/Unwinnable Condition:
The game is lost or becomes unwinnable if:
Filling Empty Tableau Spaces:
Any card or sequence may be moved into an empty tableau pile, regardless of suit or rank.
This rule allows for flexible rearrangement and increases the odds of winning.
No Redeal:
The stock may be dealt through only once; there is no opportunity to reshuffle or redeal the stock.
Sequence Movement:
Multiple cards in descending rank order (regardless of suit) may be moved together as a unit between tableau piles.
Waste Pile Restrictions:
Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play; cards beneath are inaccessible until uncovered.
Immediate Foundation Moves:
Cards eligible for the foundation (e.g., Aces at the start) should be moved there as soon as possible for optimal play.
Edge Case—Stock Exhaustion:
Once the stock is empty, play continues only with tableau and waste cards. If no moves remain, the game ends.
Dieppe Solitaire is characterized by its use of two decks, flexible tableau building, and high odds of winnability due to the ability to move sequences and fill spaces with any card or group.
