How to play Dimes?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Dimes Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock onto the eight foundation piles, building each foundation according to strict suit and sequence rules specific to this variant.

Setup & Layout:

  • Decks Used: Two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Foundations: 8 piles. At the start of the game, a Ten of each suit is placed on each foundation pile. These serve as the base cards for building the foundations.
  • Tableau: 8 piles, each dealt one card face-up at the start of the game.
  • Stock: The remaining cards after the initial deal form the stock pile, placed face-down.
  • Waste: Cards drawn from the stock are placed face-up in a waste pile; only the top card of the waste is available for play.
  • Face Orientation: All tableau cards are dealt face-up. The stock is face-down. The top card of the waste is face-up.

Key Play Areas Defined:

  • Foundations: Where cards are built up or down in suit, starting from the Ten.
  • Tableau: Eight columns with one face-up card each; only the top card of each pile is available for play.
  • Stock: Supplies new cards into play, one at a time.
  • Waste: Holds cards drawn from the stock; only the top card is playable.

Dimes Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:

  • There are 8 foundation piles, each starting with a Ten (one per suit).

  • Foundations are built up in suit from Ten to Ace, then continuing from King down to Nine (i.e., Ten, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, Two, Three, …, Nine).

  • Only cards of the same suit and the correct sequential value may be placed on a foundation pile.

  • Tableau:

  • There are 8 tableau piles, each with one face-up card.

  • Tableau piles are built down in suit (e.g., Jack of Spades on Queen of Spades).

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play.

  • Any card (from tableau, waste, or stock) may fill an empty tableau pile.

  • Stock & Waste:

  • Cards are drawn one at a time from the stock to the waste pile.

  • Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play on either the tableau or the foundations.

  • Card Movement:

  • Only single cards may be moved at a time (no sequences).

  • Cards may be moved from tableau or waste to either another tableau pile (if building down in suit) or to the foundations (if the card is the next in sequence for that suit).

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:

  • Move the top card of any tableau pile to another tableau pile (if building down in suit).

  • Move the top card of any tableau pile or the waste pile to a foundation (if it continues the sequence in suit).

  • Fill any empty tableau pile with any available card (from tableau or waste).

  • Draw a card from the stock to the waste pile when no further moves are available or desired from current cards.

  • Stock Usage:

  • Cards are drawn from the stock one at a time to the waste.

  • There are no redeals; once the stock is depleted, no further cards can be drawn.

  • When No Moves Remain:

  • If no legal moves are possible and the stock is exhausted, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The game is won when all 104 cards have been moved to the eight foundation piles, each correctly built in suit from Ten up to Ace, then King down to Nine.
  • Losing Condition: The game is lost if no further legal moves are possible and not all cards have been moved to the foundations (i.e., stock and waste are exhausted, and no plays remain on tableau).

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles: Any card may be placed into an empty tableau pile, regardless of rank or suit.
  • No Sequence Moves: Only single cards may be moved at a time; sequences of cards cannot be moved as a group.
  • No Redeals: The stock may be cycled through only once; there are no redeals or recycling of the waste pile.
  • Foundation Wrapping: Foundations are built up in suit from Ten to Ace, then continue from King down to Nine, completing the full suit sequence.
  • Playable Cards: Only the top card of each tableau pile and the top card of the waste pile are available for play at any time.
