How to play Dorothy?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Dorothy Solitaire is to build all cards from the tableau and stock onto the designated foundation piles according to specific building rules, thereby clearing the tableau and stock entirely.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Used: Standard 52-card deck.
  • Foundation Piles: There are 12 foundation piles, divided as follows:
    • Top 4 piles: Each starts with a Ten and is built down in suit by twos (e.g., 10, 8, 6, 4, 2).
    • Middle 4 piles: Each starts with a Jack and is built up in suit by twos (e.g., J, Q, A, 3, 5, 7, 9).
    • Bottom 4 piles: Each starts with a Nine and is built up in suit by twos (e.g., 9, J, K, 2, 4, 6, 8).
  • Tableau: The remaining cards are dealt into the tableau, typically in a single row or columns. Specific tableau setup may vary, but all cards are usually dealt face up for full visibility.
  • Stock: Any undealt cards form the stock pile, which is used to introduce new cards into play.
  • Key Play Areas Defined:
    • Foundation: Where cards are built according to the rules above.
    • Tableau: The main play area where cards are manipulated before moving to the foundations.
    • Stock: The reserve pile from which cards are drawn during play.

Dorothy Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement Principles:
    • Cards may be moved from the tableau or stock to the foundations if they fit the specific building sequence for that foundation pile.
    • Only cards that continue the sequence by two (either up or down, depending on the foundation type) and match the suit may be placed on a foundation pile.
    • For the bottom foundation piles (starting with Nine), any nine may be moved to any empty pile; subsequent cards must be two higher in suit (e.g., 9, J, K, 2, 4, 6, 8).
    • For the top foundation piles (starting with Ten), build down in suit by twos (e.g., 10, 8, 6, 4, 2).
    • For the middle foundation piles (starting with Jack), build up in suit by twos (e.g., J, Q, A, 3, 5, 7, 9).
  • Building Sequences:
    • All building on foundations is strictly by suit and by twos (either ascending or descending, as specified).
    • No mixing of suits or deviation from the two-step sequence is allowed.
  • Moving Cards:
    • Only the top card of a tableau pile or the next card from the stock may be moved.
    • Sequences cannot be moved; only single cards are eligible for movement to foundations.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
    • Examine tableau and stock for eligible moves to foundation piles.
    • Move any available card that fits the foundation’s building rule.
    • If no moves are available, draw a card from the stock and attempt to play it.
    • Continue cycling through stock and tableau until all cards are placed on the foundations or no more moves are possible.
  • Introducing New Cards:
    • Cards are drawn from the stock one at a time and played if possible.
    • If a drawn card cannot be played, it is set aside (often in a waste pile) until the stock is exhausted.
  • No More Legal Moves:
    • If the player cannot make any legal moves from tableau or stock, and the stock is exhausted, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The game is won when all cards are correctly built onto the 12 foundation piles according to their specific rules.
  • Losing Condition: The game is lost if no further legal moves are possible and cards remain in the tableau or stock, making it impossible to complete all foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Foundation Piles:
    • For the bottom foundation piles, any nine may be moved to an empty pile.
    • For other foundation piles, only the designated starting card (Ten for top, Jack for middle) may begin a new pile.
  • Restrictions:
    • Only single cards may be moved; sequences are not permitted.
    • All building must be strictly by suit and in increments of two (either up or down, depending on pile type).
    • No cards may be moved between foundation piles.
  • Exceptions:
    • If a foundation pile is emptied (for example, through a misdeal), only the correct starting card (Nine, Ten, or Jack) may be placed to restart the pile.

Note: Dorothy Solitaire is a highly specialized variant with strict building rules and 12 foundation piles, making it distinct from classic solitaire games such as Klondike or Spider. Always ensure you follow the suit and two-step sequence for all foundation moves.
