How to play Double Yukon?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Double Yukon Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up in suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Double Yukon Solitaire uses two standard 52-card decks, totaling 104 cards.
  • Tableau:
  • There are ten tableau piles (sometimes called "maneuver stacks").
  • Deal cards as follows:
    • Pile 1: 1 face-down card
    • Pile 2: 2 face-down cards
    • Continue in this manner until Pile 10 has 10 face-down cards.
  • Then, deal additional face-up cards:
    • Pile 1: 4 face-up cards (on top of the face-down card)
    • Piles 2–10: 5 face-up cards each (on top of their respective face-down cards).
  • Foundations:
  • There are eight foundation piles (one for each suit in the double deck).
  • Foundations start with an Ace and are built up in ascending order by suit to King.
  • Key Play Areas:
  • Tableau: The main play area where cards are built down in alternating colors.
  • Foundations: The area where completed suit sequences are built.
  • Card Orientation:
  • All cards dealt first in each tableau pile are face-down.
  • The additional cards dealt to each pile are face-up.

Double Yukon Solitaire Rules:

  • Building on the Tableau:
  • Cards are built down in sequence and by alternating color (e.g., red 9 on black 10).
  • Any face-up card in a tableau pile, along with all cards on top of it, may be moved together as a group, even if the group is not in perfect sequence.
  • Moving Cards:
  • You may move any face-up card and all cards above it as a unit to another tableau pile, provided the move follows the building rule (one rank lower and alternating color).
  • Foundations:
  • Only Aces may start a foundation pile.
  • Cards are added to foundations in ascending order and matching suit (Ace, 2, 3, …, King).
  • Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved back to the tableau.
  • Empty Tableau Piles:
  • Only a King (with or without a sequence of cards beneath it) may be moved to an empty tableau pile.

Gameplay:

  • Player Actions:
  • Move any available face-up card (and all cards above it) within the tableau according to the building rules.
  • Move Aces and other appropriate cards to the foundations as soon as possible.
  • When the top card of a tableau pile is face-down and becomes exposed, flip it face-up.
  • No Stock or Reserve:
  • There is no stock or reserve pile in Double Yukon Solitaire; all cards are in play from the start.
  • No Redeals:
  • Once a card is moved, it cannot return to its previous position.
  • When No Moves Remain:
  • If no legal moves are available and not all cards are in the foundations, the game is lost.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning:
  • The game is won when all 104 cards are moved to the eight foundation piles, each built up in suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing:
  • The game is lost if no further legal moves are possible and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles:
  • Only a King (or a valid sequence headed by a King) may be moved into an empty tableau pile.
  • Moving Groups of Cards:
  • Any face-up card and all cards above it may be moved together, regardless of whether the group forms a proper sequence.
  • Flipping Cards:
  • When the top card of a tableau pile is face-down and becomes exposed, it must be flipped face-up immediately.
  • No Stock, No Redeal:
  • There is no stock or waste pile; all cards are dealt at the start.
  • No Foundation Reversal:
  • Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved back to the tableau.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main area where cards are arranged in columns and manipulated during play.
  • Foundation: The area where cards are built up in suit from Ace to King.
  • Face-up/Face-down: Orientation of cards; face-up means visible to the player, face-down means hidden.
