How to play Eclipse?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Eclipse Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up in ascending order by suit from Ace through King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Used: Two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Tableau: Thirteen tableau piles, each initially dealt four cards face up (totaling 52 cards in the tableau).
  • Foundations: Eight empty foundation piles above or beside the tableau.
  • Stock: The remaining 52 cards form the stock pile.
  • Card Orientation: All tableau cards are dealt face up. Cards dealt from the stock are also face up.
  • Key Play Areas Defined:
  • Tableau: Thirteen piles where play and sequence-building occur.
  • Foundations: Eight piles to build each suit from Ace to King.
  • Stock: Holds undealt cards; used to replenish the tableau.

Eclipse Solitaire Rules:

  • Tableau Building:
  • Cards in the tableau are built down by the same suit (e.g., 8♠ onto 9♠).
  • Sequences of cards built down by suit can be moved as a group between tableau piles.
  • Any card or valid sequence can be moved to an empty tableau pile.
  • Foundation Building:
  • Foundations are built up by suit, starting with the Ace and ending with the King (e.g., Ace♣, 2♣, 3♣, …, King♣).
  • Only an Ace may be placed on an empty foundation pile.
  • Stock Usage:
  • When activated, the stock deals one card face up to each tableau pile.
  • The stock can be used four times in a game, each time dealing one card to each tableau pile.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • Move cards or sequences within the tableau, building down by suit.
  • Move Aces to empty foundation piles, then continue building up by suit.
  • Move any card or valid sequence to an empty tableau pile.
  • Using the Stock:
  • When no further moves are possible or at the player's discretion, use the stock to deal one card face up to each tableau pile.
  • The stock may be used up to four times during the game.
  • No More Legal Moves:
  • If no moves are possible and the stock is exhausted, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The game is won when all 104 cards are moved to the eight foundation piles, each built up in suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing/Unwinnable Condition: The game is lost if no legal moves remain and the stock is exhausted before all cards are moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles: Any card or valid sequence may be moved to an empty tableau pile; there are no restrictions on which card or sequence can fill the space.
  • Moving Sequences: Only sequences built down by the same suit may be moved together as a unit.
  • Stock Limit: The stock may be activated a maximum of four times per game, each time dealing one card to each tableau pile.
  • All Cards Face Up: There is no hidden information; all tableau cards are always face up.
  • No Redeal: Once the stock has been used four times, it cannot be reused or reshuffled.

Summary of Unique Mechanics:
Eclipse Solitaire is distinguished by its thirteen tableau piles, the requirement to build down in-suit, the ability to move any sequence or card to empty tableau spaces, and its four-use stock mechanic.
