How to play Even and Odd?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Even and Odd Solitaire is to move all cards from the stock, reserve, and waste to the foundations, building each foundation in a specific sequence by suit and in steps of two, until all cards are correctly placed.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use two standard 52-card decks (104 cards total).
  • Reserve: Deal nine cards face-up in a 3x3 grid. This is the reserve. All reserve cards are available for play on the foundations. No building occurs within the reserve.
  • Foundations: There are eight foundation piles:
  • Four start with an Ace of each suit (the "Odd" foundations).
  • Four start with a Two of each suit (the "Even" foundations).
  • Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, placed face-down.
  • Waste: The waste pile is created during play. Cards from the stock that cannot be immediately played to the foundations are placed here, face-up. Only the top card of the waste is available for play.
  • Face Orientation: All cards in the reserve and waste are face-up. The stock is face-down. Foundations are built face-up.

Even and Odd Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:
  • Odd (Ace) Foundations: Build up in suit by twos, following the sequence:
    A, 3, 5, 7, 9, J, K, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, Q.
  • Even (Two) Foundations: Build up in suit by twos, following the sequence:
    2, 4, 6, 8, 10, Q, A, 3, 5, 7, 9, J, K.
  • Only cards of the same suit may be built on a foundation.
  • Reserve:
  • Only the top card of each reserve pile is available for play to the foundations.
  • No building or moving cards within the reserve.
  • Stock and Waste:
  • Cards are dealt one at a time from the stock to the waste.
  • The top card of the waste is available for play to the foundations.
  • Filling Vacancies:
  • Any gap in the reserve is immediately filled from the waste; if the waste is empty, fill from the stock.
  • Redeal:
  • Only one redeal is allowed. After the stock is exhausted, pick up the waste pile, turn it over (without shuffling), and use it as the new stock.
  • After the redeal, no further redeals are permitted.
  • No Tableau: There is no tableau or building area outside the reserve and foundations.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • Play any available card from the reserve or the top of the waste to the appropriate foundation if it fits the building sequence and suit.
  • If no moves are possible, draw one card from the stock to the waste.
  • Whenever a reserve space is emptied, immediately fill it from the waste or, if the waste is empty, from the stock.
  • Stock Depletion:
  • When the stock is empty, pick up the waste, turn it over, and use it as the new stock for one redeal.
  • After the second pass through the stock, no further redeals are allowed.
  • No Moves Available:
  • If no legal moves remain and the stock and waste are both empty, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The game is won when all cards are moved to the foundations, completing each foundation in the correct sequence and suit.
  • Losing Condition: The game is lost if, after the single permitted redeal, there are still cards remaining in the reserve, waste, or stock, and no further legal moves are possible.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Reserve Spaces: Always fill any empty reserve space immediately, first from the waste, then from the stock if the waste is empty.
  • No Building in Reserve: You may not move cards between reserve piles or build on reserve cards. Only the top card of each reserve pile is available for play to the foundations.
  • Foundation Suit Restriction: Cards must be built onto the foundations strictly by suit and in steps of two, according to the odd or even sequence.
  • No Removal from Foundations: Once a card is placed on a foundation, it may not be removed.
  • Redeal Limitation: Only one redeal is permitted per game. After the second pass through the stock, the game proceeds until no further moves are possible.
  • No Tableau or Sequence Moves: There is no tableau, and you cannot move sequences—only single cards are moved at a time.
