How to play Floradora?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Floradora Solitaire is to move all eligible cards from the tableau to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up from Ace to Queen by suit. Kings are not used in foundation building and are discarded as they appear.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Floradora Solitaire uses two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Tableau: Six tableau piles are created, each containing six cards dealt face up and splayed downward so all cards are visible.
  • Foundations: Eight foundation piles are designated, one for each suit from both decks. These start empty.
  • Stock/Reserve: The remaining cards after dealing to the tableau form a reserve pile, typically fanned face up for easy access.
  • Card Orientation: All tableau and reserve cards are dealt face up.

Key Play Areas:

  • Tableau: Six piles where cards are initially dealt and manipulated.
  • Foundations: Eight piles where cards are built up by suit.
  • Reserve: A pile of undealt cards available for play.

Floradora Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement: Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved together.
  • Tableau Building: Cards on the tableau can be built down by rank, regardless of suit. For example, any 9 can be placed on any 10.
  • Foundation Building: Foundations are built up by suit, starting with Ace and ending with Queen. Kings are discarded and not placed on foundations.
  • Moving to Foundations: The top card of any tableau pile or any card from the reserve may be moved to a foundation if it follows the suit and sequence.
  • Filling Spaces: Empty tableau spaces may be filled with any card from the tableau or reserve.
  • Reserve Use: Cards from the reserve can be played onto the tableau or directly to foundations if legal.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • Move eligible cards from tableau or reserve to the foundations.
  • Build tableau piles down by rank (regardless of suit).
  • Fill empty tableau spaces with any available card.
  • Continue making moves until no further legal moves are possible.
  • Introducing New Cards: Cards are introduced into play from the reserve pile as needed; there is no traditional stock draw mechanism.
  • No Stack Moves: Only single cards may be moved; entire stacks or sequences cannot be relocated.
  • No Redeals: Once the reserve is exhausted, no further cards are introduced.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all eligible cards (Ace through Queen of each suit) are successfully built onto the eight foundation piles.
  • Losing: The game is lost if no further legal moves are possible and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Kings: All Kings are discarded as they appear and do not participate in foundation building.
  • Empty Tableau Spaces: Any card may be used to fill an empty tableau space, regardless of rank or suit.
  • No Sequence Moves: Players may not move groups of cards or sequences together; only individual cards may be moved.
  • Reserve Accessibility: All reserve cards are available for play at any time; there is no restriction on which reserve card may be used.
  • No Suit Restriction for Tableau: Building on the tableau is strictly by descending rank, not by suit or color.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main play area consisting of six piles where cards are manipulated.
  • Foundation: The area where cards are built up by suit from Ace to Queen.
  • Reserve: The pile of undealt cards accessible throughout the game.
