How to play Flower Garden?

Game Objective:

The primary objective in Flower Garden Solitaire is to move all 52 cards from the tableau and reserve areas onto four foundation piles, building each foundation in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Tableau (Flower Beds): Deal six columns, each with six cards, face-up and slightly fanned so that all cards are visible except for partial overlap. These columns are called the flower beds or tableau piles.
  • Reserve (Bouquet): The remaining 16 cards are placed face-up in a single, visible fan called the bouquet or reserve. All cards in the bouquet are available for play at any time.
  • Foundations: Four empty spaces are reserved for the foundation piles. Foundations start empty and are built during play.
  • Card Orientation: All cards are dealt face-up; there are no face-down cards in this game.

Flower Garden Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:

  • Foundations are built up by suit, starting with the Ace and proceeding in ascending order to King (A-2-3-…-K).

  • Only the next higher card of the same suit may be placed onto a foundation pile.

  • Tableau (Flower Beds):

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play.

  • Tableau piles are built down by rank, regardless of suit or color (e.g., a 7 can be placed on an 8 of any suit).

  • Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved together.

  • Reserve (Bouquet):

  • Any card from the bouquet may be played onto the tableau or directly onto the foundations at any time.

  • Bouquet cards are not replenished; once used, they are gone.

  • Empty Tableau Piles:

  • Any card (from the top of another tableau pile or from the bouquet) may be used to fill an empty tableau space.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:

  • Move the top card of any tableau pile to a foundation if it is the next rank and same suit.

  • Move any eligible card from the bouquet to a tableau pile or directly to a foundation.

  • Move the top card of one tableau pile onto another tableau pile if it is exactly one rank lower (suit does not matter).

  • Fill any empty tableau pile with any available card from the bouquet or the top of another tableau pile.

  • There is no stock pile and no redeal; all cards are in play from the start.

  • Play continues until either all cards are moved to the foundations or no further legal moves are possible.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: The game is won if all 52 cards are successfully moved to the four foundation piles, building each from Ace to King by suit.
  • Lose: The game is lost if no further legal moves can be made and not all cards are on the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles: Any card, regardless of rank or suit, from the bouquet or the top of another tableau pile, may be placed into an empty tableau pile.
  • Single Card Moves: Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved as a group.
  • Bouquet Accessibility: All bouquet cards are always available for play; there is no restriction on which bouquet card can be used at any time.
  • No Stock or Redeal: There is no stock pile, and cards are not redealt. Once the bouquet is empty, it cannot be replenished.
  • King Placement: Kings can only be moved to empty tableau piles or to the foundation when appropriate.
  • Unwinnable State: If all possible moves are exhausted and cards remain outside the foundations, the game is unwinnable and ends in a loss.

Definitions of Key Terms:

  • Tableau/Flower Beds: The six columns of six face-up cards each.
  • Bouquet/Reserve: The group of 16 face-up cards set aside at the start.
  • Foundations: Four piles, one for each suit, built from Ace to King.
