How to play Fly?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Fly Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau, reserve, and stock to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up from Ace to King regardless of suit.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Fly Solitaire uses two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Foundations: 8 piles. Each is dealt an Ace at the start of the game; these are the base cards for building up.
  • Tableau: 5 piles. No specific number of cards is initially dealt to the tableau; cards are added during play.
  • Reserve: 1 pile containing 13 cards. Only the top card is face up and available for play.
  • Stock: The remainder of the cards after dealing to the reserve and foundations forms the stock pile.
  • Waste/Tableau Piles: Sometimes referred to as "waste" piles; these are the same as tableau piles in this variant.
  • Face-Up/Face-Down: All foundation and tableau cards are face up. The reserve pile has only its top card face up; the rest are face down.

Fly Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations: Build up from Ace to King, regardless of suit or color.
  • Tableau/Waste Piles: No building is allowed within these piles. You may only place cards from the stock or reserve onto any tableau pile; you cannot move cards between tableau piles or build sequences within them.
  • Reserve: Only the top card is available for play to the foundations or tableau. Cards cannot be moved back into the reserve.
  • Stock: Deal cards one at a time onto any tableau pile. There are no restrictions on which tableau pile receives the card.
  • Card Movement: The only valid card movements are:
  • Moving the top card of any tableau pile, the reserve, or the stock to a foundation if it fits the sequence.
  • Dealing from the stock to any tableau pile.
  • No Redeals: Once the stock is exhausted, no redeal is permitted.

Gameplay:

  • On your turn, you may:
  • Move any available (top) card from the tableau, reserve, or stock to a foundation if it is the next in sequence.
  • If no moves to the foundation are possible, deal a card from the stock to any tableau pile of your choice.
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile, the reserve, and the stock are available for play.
  • You cannot move cards between tableau piles, nor can you build sequences on tableau piles.
  • Play continues until all cards have been moved to the foundations or no more legal moves are possible.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: The game is won when all 104 cards are moved to the eight foundations, built up from Ace to King.
  • Lose/Unwinnable State: The game is lost if you cannot make any further moves to the foundations and the stock is exhausted, with cards remaining in the tableau or reserve.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Piles: You may deal any card from the stock to an empty tableau pile. There is no restriction on which card can fill an empty tableau pile.
  • No Moving Between Tableau Piles: Once a card is placed on a tableau pile, it cannot be moved to another tableau pile or back to the reserve.
  • Strategic Placement: The main challenge is to avoid blocking lower cards with higher ones in the tableau, as you cannot rearrange cards once placed.
  • No Redeals: Once the stock is depleted, you cannot reshuffle or redeal it.
  • Reserve Pile: Only the top card is ever available; once played, the next card becomes available.

Key Terms Defined:

  • Foundation: A pile where cards are built up in sequence from Ace to King.
  • Tableau: The main play area where cards from the stock or reserve are placed, but not built upon.
  • Reserve: A special pile with a fixed number of cards; only the top card is playable.
  • Stock: The draw pile from which cards are dealt to the tableau.
