How to play Forty Devils?

Game Objective:

The primary objective in Forty Devils Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use two standard 52-card decks (104 cards total).
  • Tableau: Deal 10 tableau piles with 4 cards in each pile, all cards dealt face up and splayed downward so every card is visible.
  • Stock: Place the remaining 64 cards face down as the stock pile.
  • Waste: As cards are drawn from the stock, they are placed face up in the waste pile.
  • Foundations: Eight foundation piles (two for each suit), which start empty.

Key Play Areas Defined:

  • Tableau: The main play area consisting of 10 piles, each with 4 face-up cards.
  • Foundations: Eight piles where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Stock: The pile of undealt cards, face down.
  • Waste: The pile where cards from the stock are placed face up and become available for play.

Forty Devils Solitaire Rules:

  • Building on Tableau: Cards are built down by suit (e.g., 8♠ on 9♠).
  • Moving Cards: Only one card may be moved at a time, whether moving within the tableau or to the foundations.
  • Foundations: Each foundation pile must start with an Ace and be built up by suit to King (A-2-3-…-K).
  • Moving from Stock: When no moves are available, draw one card at a time from the stock to the waste pile; the top card of the waste pile is available for play.
  • Filling Spaces: Any single available card may be moved into an empty tableau pile.

Gameplay:

  1. Move available cards: Move any available top card from a tableau pile or the waste pile to either another tableau pile (building down by suit) or to the appropriate foundation (building up by suit from Ace).
  2. Draw from Stock: If no moves are possible, draw one card from the stock and place it face up on the waste pile; the top waste card is now available for play.
  3. Continue Play: Repeat moving and drawing actions, always moving only one card at a time.
  4. No Redeals: There is only one pass through the stock; once the stock is exhausted, no redeals are allowed.
  5. End of Game: Play continues until all cards are moved to the foundations or no further legal moves are possible.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all 104 cards are successfully built onto the eight foundation piles, each completed from Ace to King by suit.
  • Losing: The game is lost if no further legal moves are possible and the stock is exhausted, leaving cards remaining in the tableau or waste.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles: Any single available card (from the tableau or the waste) may be placed into an empty tableau pile.
  • Sequence Movement: Only one card may be moved at a time, regardless of whether a sequence is in order; there is no multi-card movement.
  • Waste Pile Play: Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play to either the tableau or the foundations.
  • No Redeals: Once the stock is depleted, no further cards can be drawn; play is limited to available moves among tableau, waste, and foundations.
  • All Cards Face Up: All tableau cards are dealt and remain face up throughout the game, ensuring full visibility of all cards in play.

Note: The rules above are based on the most authoritative available sources for Forty Devils Solitaire, which is a variant of Forty Thieves with the same core mechanics but often stricter movement limitations. If a source uses a slightly different name or minor rule variation, the above reflects the consensus for the "Forty Devils" variant.
