How to play Fred's Spider?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Fred's Spider Solitaire is to arrange all cards into eight complete sequences in descending order by suit (from King down to Ace) and move these sequences to the foundation piles.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Fred's Spider Solitaire uses two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Tableau: Deal 5 cards face up to each of the 10 tableau piles, resulting in 50 cards laid out in the tableau at the start.
  • Stock: The remaining 54 cards form the stock pile, placed face down.
  • Foundations: There are eight foundation piles, each intended to receive a complete sequence from King to Ace by suit.
  • Face Orientation: All tableau cards are dealt face up at the start, making all cards immediately visible and available for play.

Key Play Areas Defined:

  • Tableau: The primary area with 10 piles, where most gameplay occurs.
  • Stock: Supplies additional cards to the tableau as the game progresses.
  • Foundations: The destination for completed suit sequences.

Fred's Spider Solitaire Rules:

  • Building Sequences: Cards are built in the tableau in descending order by suit (e.g., 8♠ on 9♠).
  • Moving Cards: You may move a single card or a sequence of cards in correct descending order and of the same suit as a group.
  • Empty Tableau Piles: Any single card or valid descending sequence can be moved to an empty tableau pile.
  • Dealing from Stock: When no further moves are possible or at the player's discretion, deal one card from the stock to each tableau pile (10 cards in total per deal).
  • Foundation Movement: Completed sequences (King through Ace, all of the same suit) are moved to a foundation pile automatically or by player action.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Actions:
  • Move any exposed card or sequence in descending order by suit to another tableau pile.
  • Fill empty tableau spaces with any card or valid sequence.
  • When no more moves are available or at any chosen time, deal one card from the stock to each tableau pile.
  • Dealing from Stock: You may only deal from the stock if all tableau piles contain at least one card.
  • Revealing Cards: Since all tableau cards are face up from the start, there are no hidden cards to reveal.
  • Completing Sequences: When a complete sequence from King to Ace of the same suit is formed in a tableau pile, transfer it to a foundation pile.
  • No Moves Left: If no legal moves remain and the stock is exhausted, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all 104 cards are organized into eight complete descending suit sequences and moved to the foundation piles.
  • Losing: The game is lost or unwinnable if no further legal moves can be made and the stock is depleted, with incomplete sequences remaining in the tableau.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Piles: Any card or valid descending sequence may be moved to an empty tableau pile at any time.
  • Restrictions on Dealing: You cannot deal a new row from the stock unless every tableau pile contains at least one card.
  • No Hidden Cards: All cards in the tableau are face up, so there are no hidden cards to uncover during play.
  • Undo Option: Some digital implementations may allow undoing moves, but this is not a core rule.
  • Sequence Movement: Only sequences in perfect descending order and of the same suit may be moved as a unit; otherwise, only single cards may be moved.

Note: Fred's Spider Solitaire is an easier variant of standard Spider Solitaire due to all tableau cards being dealt face up, reducing the element of hidden information and making planning more straightforward.
