How to play FreeFan?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in FreeFan Solitaire is to build all cards into the foundation piles, arranging each suit in ascending order from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Used: Standard 52-card deck.
  • Initial Deal: Deal three cards face-up to each of 18 tableau piles called fans. The last two fans each receive only two cards, using all 52 cards in the deck.
  • Play Areas:
  • Fans (Tableau): 18 piles arranged as "fans," each with 2 or 3 face-up cards.
  • Foundations: Four empty piles designated for each suit (Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs), where cards will be built up from Ace to King.
  • Card Orientation: All cards are dealt face-up; there are no face-down cards in the initial layout.
  • Stock, Reserve, or Cells: There is no stock, reserve, or free cell area in FreeFan Solitaire.

FreeFan Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement: Only the top card of each fan is available for play.
  • Building Foundations: Foundations are built up by suit, starting with Ace and continuing in ascending order to King (Ace, 2, 3, …, King).
  • Tableau Building: Cards within the fans cannot be built upon each other; fans only serve as holding areas for available cards.
  • Moving Cards: Only single cards (the top card of each fan) may be moved to a foundation pile. No sequences or multiple cards may be moved at once.
  • Suit Restriction: Cards must be placed on the foundation piles strictly in suit and ascending order.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • Examine the top card of each fan.
  • Move any available Ace to an empty foundation pile.
  • Continue moving the next sequential card (by suit) from the fans to the appropriate foundation pile whenever possible.
  • Repeat until no further moves are available.
  • No New Cards: All cards are dealt at the start; there is no stock or draw pile. No new cards enter play during the game.
  • Blocked Moves: If no available top card can be moved to a foundation, the game is stalled.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all cards are successfully built into the foundation piles, with each suit arranged from Ace to King.
  • Losing/Unwinnable State: The game is lost or becomes unwinnable if no further legal moves can be made and not all cards have been built onto the foundation piles.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Fans: If a fan becomes empty (all its cards moved to foundations), it remains empty for the rest of the game. There is no rule allowing fans to be refilled or reused.
  • No Sequence Moves: Only single cards may be moved; you cannot transfer sequences or groups of cards between fans or to foundations.
  • No Redeal: There is no redeal or reshuffling in FreeFan Solitaire.
  • No Auxiliary Areas: There are no free cells, reserve piles, or stock piles to provide additional card movement options.

Definitions:

  • Fan (Tableau Pile): A pile of cards arranged so all are visible and only the top card is available for play.
  • Foundation: A pile where cards are stacked in ascending order by suit, starting with Ace.
