How to play Friday?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Friday Solitaire is to help Robinson Crusoe survive by improving his deck and ultimately defeat two pirate hazards at the end of the game. To win, the player must successfully overcome all hazard challenges and defeat both pirate cards in the final phase.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Composition: The game uses a specialized deck, not a standard 52-card deck. It includes:
  • Hazard cards: Represent challenges Robinson must face.
  • Fight cards: Represent Robinson’s abilities and weaknesses.
  • Aging cards: Represent increasing difficulty over time.
  • Pirate cards: The final challenges.
  • Initial Arrangement:
  • Shuffle the Hazard deck and place it face-down.
  • Shuffle the Fight deck and place it face-down.
  • Set aside the Aging cards and Pirate cards as instructed by the rulebook.
  • Play Areas:
  • Hazard Row: Where two hazard cards are drawn and displayed face-up each turn.
  • Fight Card Deck: Robinson’s current deck, drawn from to resolve hazards.
  • Discard Piles: Separate piles for used hazard and fight cards.
  • Aging and Pirate Card Areas: Reserved for when these cards enter play.
  • Card Orientation:
  • Hazard cards and fight cards are drawn face-up when revealed.
  • Decks and reserves remain face-down until drawn.

Friday Solitaire Rules:

  • Turn Structure:
  • Draw two hazard cards and place them face-up.
  • Choose one hazard to face; discard the other.
  • Hazard Resolution:
  • Each hazard card lists three difficulty values (green, yellow, red) and the number of fight cards to draw ("free cards").
  • The current phase (green, yellow, or red) determines which value to beat and which fight cards to draw.
  • Building Sequences:
  • To defeat a hazard, draw the specified number of fight cards from your deck.
  • Add up the values on the fight cards; some may have negative values.
  • You may draw additional fight cards by spending life points (health), one per extra card.
  • Card Movement:
  • If you defeat the hazard, add the hazard card to your fight deck discard pile; it becomes a new fight card for future turns.
  • If you fail, lose life points equal to the difference between the target value and your total, then discard the hazard card.
  • Aging Cards:
  • When instructed, shuffle aging cards into your fight deck, increasing difficulty.

Gameplay:

  • Sequence of Play:
  • Draw two hazard cards, choose one, and discard the other.
  • Draw the indicated number of fight cards.
  • Optionally draw more fight cards by spending life points.
  • Apply any abilities from drawn fight cards.
  • If the total meets or exceeds the hazard value, you win; otherwise, lose life points.
  • Deck Cycling:
  • When your fight deck runs out, shuffle the discard pile to form a new deck and add an aging card.
  • Progress through three phases: green, yellow, red. Each phase increases hazard difficulty.
  • Pirate Phase:
  • After completing all hazards in the red phase, face two pirate cards sequentially. Each pirate has its own requirements and must be defeated using the same mechanics as hazards.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning:
  • Successfully defeat both pirate cards after completing all hazard phases.
  • Losing:
  • Lose if Robinson’s life points reach zero at any time.
  • Lose if unable to defeat both pirate cards at the end.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Decks:
  • When the fight deck is empty, shuffle the discard pile and add an aging card before continuing.
  • Hazard Phases:
  • After completing all hazards in the green phase, advance to yellow, then red. Each phase increases the required values on hazard cards.
  • Abilities:
  • Some fight cards have special abilities (e.g., "phase minus one" lets you resolve a hazard at a lower difficulty phase).
  • Drawing Fewer Cards:
  • If you reach the hazard value before drawing all required fight cards, you may stop early to avoid negative cards.
  • Health Management:
  • Life points are spent to draw extra fight cards but are limited; careful management is crucial.
  • Unwinnable State:
  • If you cannot draw enough fight cards to defeat a hazard and have no life points left, you lose.
