How to play Solitaire?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Solitaire Solitaire is to move all cards from the deck into the four foundation piles, each organized by suit in ascending order from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Tableau: Create seven tableau piles from left to right. The first pile has one card face up. Each subsequent pile receives one additional card, with only the top card face up and the rest face down. For example, the second pile has one card face up atop one card face down; the third has one card face up atop two cards face down, and so forth until the seventh pile, which has one card face up atop six cards face down.
  • Stock (Draw) Pile: Place the remaining cards face down above the tableau. This pile is used to introduce new cards into play.
  • Waste (Talon) Pile: Cards drawn from the stock that cannot be played immediately are placed face up in the waste pile.
  • Foundation Piles: Four empty spaces above the tableau, one for each suit, to be filled in ascending order from Ace to King.

Key Play Areas Defined:

  • Tableau: Seven columns where cards are arranged and manipulated.
  • Stock: The draw pile for introducing new cards.
  • Waste: Temporary holding area for unplayable drawn cards.
  • Foundations: Four piles for each suit, built from Ace to King.

Solitaire Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement Principles:
  • Only face-up cards can be moved.
  • Cards are moved between tableau columns in descending order and must alternate colors (red/black).
  • Groups of sequential cards can be moved together if they maintain descending order and alternating colors.
  • Only Kings (or sequences starting with a King) can be moved to empty tableau columns.
  • When the top face-up card in a tableau column is moved, the next face-down card beneath it is flipped face up and becomes playable.
  • Foundation Building:
  • Foundations are built by suit, starting with Aces, then adding cards in ascending order up to King.
  • Cards can be moved from the tableau or waste pile to the foundations if they follow suit and sequence.
  • Cards from the foundation may be moved back to the tableau if it aids play and maintains sequence.
  • Stock and Waste:
  • Draw cards from the stock pile, typically three at a time (or one in easier variations), placing them face up in the waste pile.
  • Cards from the waste pile can be played to the tableau or foundations if legal.
  • When the stock is exhausted, flip the waste pile face down to reform the stock, without shuffling.

Gameplay:

  • Typical Turn Sequence:
  • Move any available face-up cards within the tableau, following descending order and alternating colors.
  • Transfer eligible cards to the foundation piles by suit and ascending order.
  • When no moves are available, draw cards from the stock pile and place them in the waste pile.
  • Play cards from the waste pile to the tableau or foundations as allowed.
  • After moving a face-up card from a tableau column, flip the next face-down card in that column to face up and continue play.
  • Introducing New Cards:
  • Draw from the stock pile when stuck; use the waste pile as a secondary source for playable cards.
  • When both the stock and waste piles are depleted, recycle the waste pile into a new stock pile.
  • No Legal Moves:
  • If no legal moves are available and the stock cannot be recycled, the game ends in a loss.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition:
  • The game is won when all 52 cards are placed in the four foundation piles, each in ascending order from Ace to King and by suit.
  • Losing/Unwinnable Condition:
  • The game is lost or unwinnable if no further legal moves can be made and the stock pile cannot be recycled.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces:
  • Only Kings (or sequences starting with a King) may be moved into empty tableau columns.
  • Moving Cards from Foundations:
  • Cards from the foundation piles may be moved back to the tableau if it maintains proper sequence and aids in further play.
  • Stock Recycling:
  • When the stock pile is exhausted, flip the waste pile face down to form a new stock pile, without shuffling.
  • Sequence Movement:
  • Groups of sequenced cards may be moved together within the tableau, provided they maintain descending order and alternating colors.
  • Edge Cases:
  • If all tableau columns are empty except for one, only a King or a valid King sequence may fill each empty space.
  • If the stock and waste piles are both empty and no moves remain, the game ends immediately.
