How to play Incompatibility?

Game Objective:

The primary objective in Incompatibility Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock into the foundation piles, building each foundation by suit in ascending order from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Tableau: Seven piles are arranged from left to right. The first pile contains one card, the second two cards, and so forth, up to seven cards in the seventh pile. Only the top card of each pile is dealt face-up; all other cards in the tableau are face-down.
  • Stock: The remaining cards after dealing the tableau form the stock pile, placed face-down.
  • Foundations: Four empty foundation piles are designated, typically above the tableau. These start empty and are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Waste/Discard Pile: As cards are drawn from the stock, they are placed face-up onto the waste pile.

Key Play Areas:

  • Tableau: The main area for building sequences and manipulating cards.
  • Foundations: The target area for completed suit sequences.
  • Stock: The supply of undealt cards.
  • Waste: The area for cards drawn from the stock.

Incompatibility Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement Principles:

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play.

  • Cards may be moved from the tableau to the foundations or to another tableau pile, subject to building rules.

  • Cards from the stock are drawn one at a time and placed on the waste pile. The top card of the waste pile is available for play.

  • Building Sequences:

  • Tableau piles are built in descending order, with each card placed on a card of the opposite color (e.g., red on black, black on red).

  • Only single cards may be moved at a time, unless moving a properly sequenced group.

  • Foundations are built up by suit, starting with Ace and ending with King.

  • Movement Conditions:

  • Cards can be moved from tableau to tableau, from tableau to foundation, or from waste to tableau/foundation, as long as they follow the building rules.

  • Only Kings may be placed in empty tableau spaces.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:

  • On each turn, the player may move cards within the tableau, from the tableau or waste to the foundations, or between tableau piles, following the building rules.

  • If no moves are available, the player draws one card from the stock and places it on the waste pile.

  • The top card of the waste pile becomes available for play.

  • Introducing New Cards:

  • Cards enter play from the stock, one at a time, onto the waste pile.

  • When the stock is exhausted, the waste pile is turned over (without shuffling) to become the new stock.

  • No Legal Moves:

  • If no moves are possible and the stock is depleted, the game ends in a lost state.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning:

  • The game is won when all cards have been successfully moved to the foundation piles, completing each suit from Ace to King.

  • Losing/Unwinnable State:

  • The game is lost if no legal moves remain and the stock cannot be replenished, leaving cards stranded in the tableau or waste pile.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Spaces:

  • Only Kings may be placed in empty tableau spaces.

  • Restrictions and Exceptions:

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile or waste pile may be moved.

  • Groups of cards in proper descending, alternating color sequence may be moved together between tableau piles.

  • If the stock is exhausted, the waste pile is turned over to form a new stock; this may be limited to a set number of cycles in some rule variants.

  • No cards may be moved directly from the foundation back to the tableau or waste pile.

  • Unique Mechanic:

  • The defining feature of Incompatibility Solitaire is the strict alternation of colors and the restriction to single-card moves unless a perfect descending, alternating sequence is present.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main area where cards are arranged in piles and manipulated during play.
  • Foundation: The target piles for building complete suit sequences from Ace to King.
  • Stock: The pile of undealt cards, drawn from as play progresses.
  • Waste: The pile where cards drawn from the stock are placed, with only the top card available for play.
