How to play Jumbo Klondike?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Jumbo Klondike Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock into the four foundation piles, building each foundation in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck, with no Jokers.
  • Tableau: Seven columns are dealt from left to right.
    • The first column receives one card (face up).
    • Each subsequent column receives one additional card than the previous, with only the top card face up and all others face down.
    • Example: The first pile has 1 card (face up), the second has 1 face-down and 1 face-up, the third has 2 face-down and 1 face-up, continuing until the seventh pile has 6 face-down and 1 face-up card.
  • Foundations: Four empty piles, one for each suit, placed above the tableau.
  • Stock: The remaining cards after the tableau is dealt, placed face down in a single pile.
  • Waste: A discard pile for cards drawn from the stock that cannot be played immediately.
  • Play Areas Defined:
    • Tableau: Main play area with seven columns.
    • Foundations: Destination piles for building up each suit.
    • Stock: Source of new cards.
    • Waste: Temporary holding area for unplayable stock cards.

Jumbo Klondike Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement Principles:
    • Cards within the tableau are built in descending order, alternating colors (red/black).
    • Only the top face-up card of each tableau pile (or a properly sequenced group of face-up cards) may be moved.
    • Sequences of face-up cards may be moved together if they maintain the descending, alternating color pattern.
  • Building Sequences:
    • Tableau piles: Build down in rank (King → Queen → Jack → … → Ace) and alternate colors.
    • Foundations: Build up in suit (Ace → 2 → 3 → … → King).
  • Moving Cards:
    • Cards from the tableau or waste may be moved onto another tableau pile if they follow the descending, alternating color rule.
    • Only an Ace can start a foundation; subsequent cards must be the next rank and same suit.
    • Only a King (or a properly sequenced group starting with a King) may fill an empty tableau space.
    • Cards drawn from the stock are placed on the waste; only the top card of the waste is available for play.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
    • Move available face-up cards within the tableau, build on foundations, or move cards from the waste as allowed.
    • When no moves are available, draw cards from the stock:
      • Depending on the variant, draw one or three cards at a time from the stock to the waste.
      • Only the top card of the waste is playable.
    • Reveal face-down cards in the tableau when the face-up card above them is moved.
    • Continue moving cards and drawing from the stock until all cards are moved to the foundations or no further moves are possible.
  • Introducing New Cards:
    • Draw from the stock as needed; cards move from stock to waste, then from waste to tableau or foundation if possible.
    • When a tableau pile is emptied, only a King (or a valid sequence starting with a King) may be placed in the empty space.
  • No More Legal Moves:
    • If all cards in the stock have been cycled through and no moves are possible, the game is lost.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition:
    • The game is won when all 52 cards are moved to the four foundation piles, each built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing/Unwinnable Condition:
    • The game is lost if no legal moves remain and the stock has been exhausted, making it impossible to move all cards to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces:
    • Only a King or a correctly sequenced group of cards starting with a King may be placed into an empty tableau pile.
  • Stock Cycling:
    • Variants exist regarding how many times the stock can be cycled:
      • Unlimited passes, limited passes (often three), or only a single pass.
      • Jumbo Klondike Solitaire may allow unlimited passes, especially in digital/mobile versions.
  • Sequence Movement:
    • Any group of face-up cards in the tableau forming a valid descending, alternating color sequence may be moved as a unit.
  • Card Access:
    • When a face-up card is moved from a tableau pile, immediately turn the next face-down card in that pile face up.
  • Device Adaptation:
    • "Jumbo" refers to the game being optimized for larger screens or easier play, but does not alter core rules.
