How to play Junction?

Game Objective:

The primary objective in Junction Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the foundation piles, building each foundation up in sequence by suit, until all cards are correctly placed and the tableau is empty.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Composition: Junction Solitaire uses four piquet decks (totaling 128 cards). Each piquet deck consists of 32 cards: the 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s of every suit are removed, so each deck contains only Aces and 7 through King of each suit.

  • Play Areas:

  • Tableau: Seven tableau piles are created. Each pile is dealt one card face-up in a splayed (spread) downhill arrangement.

  • Foundations: There are eight foundation piles, one for each suit. Foundations start empty.

  • Stock: The remaining cards after the tableau setup form the stock pile, placed face-down.

  • Garbage (Waste) Pile: There is a single garbage pile, which receives cards dealt from the stock.

  • Card Orientation:

  • All tableau cards are dealt face-up.

  • Stock cards are face-down until drawn.

  • Foundation and garbage piles are face-up.

Junction Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundation Building:

  • Cards are built up by suit in ascending order (e.g., 7♣, 8♣, 9♣, …, K♣, A♣).

  • Only the next higher card of the same suit may be placed on a foundation (e.g., only 10♥ can be played on 9♥).

  • Once placed, cards cannot be removed from the foundation.

  • Tableau Building:

  • Cards are built down by alternating color (red on black or black on red), in descending order (e.g., 10♣ can receive 9♥ or 9♦).

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile (uncovered) is available for play.

  • Any single card may be moved to another tableau pile if it follows the descending, alternating color rule.

  • Movement Between Areas:

  • Cards from the tableau or the top card of the garbage pile may be moved to the foundation or to another tableau pile, following the respective building rules.

  • Empty tableau slots may be filled with any card.

  • Stock and Garbage Pile:

  • When the stock is clicked, one card is dealt face-up to the garbage pile.

  • Only the top card of the garbage pile is available for play to the tableau or foundation.

  • There is only one pass through the stock; once all cards have been dealt to the garbage pile, no further cards can be drawn.

Gameplay:

  • Player Actions per Turn:

  • Move eligible cards from the tableau or garbage pile to the foundation, following suit and ascending order.

  • Move eligible cards between tableau piles, following alternating color and descending order.

  • Fill any empty tableau slot with any available card.

  • When no moves are possible, click the stock to deal one card to the garbage pile.

  • Play the top card of the garbage pile to the tableau or foundation if possible.

  • Introducing New Cards:

  • New cards enter play only via the stock, dealt one at a time to the garbage pile.

  • No More Legal Moves:

  • If no moves are possible and the stock is exhausted, the game is over.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition:

  • The game is won when all cards are moved to the foundation piles, following the building rules for suit and sequence.

  • Losing Condition:

  • The game is lost (unwinnable) if the stock is exhausted and no further legal moves can be made, leaving cards stranded in the tableau or garbage pile.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Slots:

  • Any card may be placed into an empty tableau pile, regardless of rank or suit.

  • Sequence Movement:

  • Only single cards may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved as a unit.

  • Stock Pass Limitation:

  • There is only one pass through the stock; once all cards are dealt to the garbage pile, no redeal is permitted.

  • Foundation Pile Limit:

  • Each foundation pile can hold a maximum of eight cards.

  • Irrevocable Moves:

  • Cards moved to the foundation cannot be retrieved or moved elsewhere.

  • Garbage Pile Play:

  • Only the top card of the garbage pile is playable; lower cards are inaccessible until uncovered.

Definitions:

  • Foundation: Area where cards are built up by suit and sequence.
  • Tableau: Main play area where cards are built down in alternating colors.
  • Stock: Face-down pile from which cards are drawn.
  • Garbage (Waste) Pile: Receives cards from the stock; only the top card may be played.
