How to play Klondike Territory?

Game Objective:

The primary objective of Klondike Territory Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the four foundation piles, building each foundation in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck (no jokers).
  • Tableau: Deal seven tableau piles:
  • The first pile receives one card, the second receives two, and so on up to the seventh pile, which receives seven cards.
  • All cards are dealt face up in this variant, which distinguishes it from classic Klondike where some cards are face down.
  • Stock: Place the remaining cards (if any) face down to form the stock pile.
  • Foundations: Four empty foundation piles, one for each suit, are positioned above the tableau.
  • Waste Pile: If used, cards drawn from the stock are placed here face up; only the top card is available for play.

Key Play Areas:

  • Tableau: Seven face-up piles where most play occurs.
  • Foundations: Four piles to build each suit from Ace to King.
  • Stock: Face-down pile for drawing additional cards.
  • Waste: Face-up pile for cards drawn from the stock (if implemented in this variant).

Klondike Territory Solitaire Rules:

  • Building on Tableau: Cards are built down in rank (e.g., 9 on 10) and must alternate suit color (red on black, black on red).
  • Moving Cards: You may move a single card or a correctly ordered sequence of cards (descending, alternating colors) from one tableau pile to another.
  • Moving to Foundations: Cards are moved to the foundations in ascending order (Ace to King) and must match suit.
  • Stock/Waste Play: If the stock is present, draw one card at a time to the waste pile; only the top card of the waste is playable.
  • Empty Tableau Piles: Only a King (or a sequence starting with a King) may be placed into an empty tableau space.

Gameplay:

  • On your turn, perform any of the following actions:
  • Move a face-up card or a valid sequence from one tableau pile to another, following the descending, alternating color rule.
  • Move an Ace or the next-in-suit card to the appropriate foundation pile.
  • If using a stock, draw one card at a time to the waste pile; play the top waste card to the tableau or foundation if possible.
  • Whenever you expose a new card in the tableau, it is already face up (unique to this variant).
  • If you cannot make any more legal moves and the stock is depleted, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: You win by moving all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, each built up from Ace to King in the same suit.
  • Lose/Unwinnable: The game is lost or unwinnable if no further legal moves can be made and not all cards are in the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Spaces: Only a King or a sequence starting with a King may be placed in an empty tableau pile.
  • All Cards Face Up: Unlike standard Klondike, all tableau cards are dealt face up at the start, eliminating the need to flip cards during play.
  • No Filling with Non-Kings: You cannot fill empty tableau spaces with any card other than a King or a King-led sequence.
  • Sequence Movement: You may move a sequence of cards (descending, alternating colors) as a unit, provided the move follows the tableau building rules.
  • Stock & Waste: If a stock is present, draw and play as described; if not, all cards are in play from the start.

Note: Some digital implementations may omit the stock and waste, dealing all cards face up in the tableau and requiring all play to occur from the tableau piles.

Summary of Unique Features:

  • All tableau cards are face up from the beginning.
  • Stock and waste may be omitted or included depending on the implementation.
  • Empty tableau spaces can only be filled with Kings or King-led sequences.
  • All standard Klondike movement and foundation rules apply, with the face-up tableau as the major distinction.
