The primary goal in Lady Jane Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.
Setup & Layout:
Deck: Lady Jane Solitaire uses two standard 52-card decks (104 cards total).
Foundations: There are eight foundation piles. These are initially empty.
Tableau: There are ten tableau columns. Cards are dealt as follows:
Column 1: 1 card
Column 2: 2 cards
Column 3: 3 cards
… up to
Column 10: 10 cards
All tableau cards are dealt face-up.
Stock: The remaining 49 cards (after tableau setup) form the stock pile.
Waste: Cards dealt from the stock are placed face-up in the waste pile. Only the top card of the waste is available for play.
Key Play Areas:
Foundations: Where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
Tableau: Main play area where cards are built down by rank, regardless of suit.
Stock: Supplies additional cards during play.
Waste: Receives cards from the stock; only the top card is playable.
Lady Jane Solitaire Rules:
Fundamental Principles:
Foundations: Build up in ascending order by suit, starting with Ace and ending with King. Only an Ace may be placed on an empty foundation pile. Only the next higher card of the same suit can be placed on a foundation (e.g., 2♠ on Ace♠, 3♠ on 2♠, etc.).
Tableau: Build down by rank, regardless of suit (e.g., any 9 can be placed on any 10). However, sequences of cards built down in the same suit can be moved together as a group.
Stock: When activated, deals three cards face-up to the waste pile. Only the top card of the waste is available for play.
Waste: Only the top card can be played to the tableau or foundations.
Card Movement:
To Foundations: Any available Ace can be moved to an empty foundation. Cards may be added to a foundation if they are one rank higher and of the same suit as the current top card.
Within Tableau: Any card can be moved to an empty tableau space. Cards can be built down by rank, regardless of suit. Groups of cards in descending sequence and of the same suit may be moved together.
From Stock/Waste: The top card of the waste pile may be moved to the tableau or foundation.
Gameplay:
Initial Play: Begin by moving available Aces to empty foundation piles.
Building Tableau: Move cards within the tableau to build down by rank. Any card or group of cards built down in the same suit may be moved together.
Using Stock/Waste: When no moves are available in the tableau, deal three cards from the stock to the waste pile. Play the top waste card if possible.
Refilling Tableau: Any empty tableau space may be filled with any card or group of cards.
Redeal: Once the stock is exhausted, you may redeal the waste back into the stock one time, allowing two complete passes through the deck.
Continue: Repeat the process, moving cards to the foundations whenever possible, until all cards are moved or no legal moves remain.
Winning & Losing Conditions:
Winning: The game is won when all 104 cards are successfully moved to the eight foundation piles, built up by suit from Ace to King.
Losing/Unwinnable State: The game is lost or becomes unwinnable if no legal moves remain and the stock has been exhausted (including after the single permitted redeal).
Special Rules & Edge Cases:
Empty Tableau Spaces: Any card or valid sequence (built down in the same suit) may fill an empty tableau column.
Moving Groups: Only sequences built down in the same suit may be moved as a group between tableau columns. Sequences built down with mixed suits must be moved individually.
Redeal Limit: Only one redeal of the waste pile back into the stock is permitted per game.
Foundation Restrictions: Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be removed.
Waste Access: Only the top card of the waste pile is playable at any time.
Definitions:
Foundation: A pile where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
Tableau: The main area of play where cards are arranged in columns and built down by rank.
Stock: The pile supplying additional cards, dealt three at a time to the waste.
Waste: The pile receiving cards from the stock; only the top card is available for play.
