The primary goal in Lafayette Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau, reserve, and stock to the two foundation piles—one built up in sequence by suit and the other built down in sequence by suit—until all cards are successfully transferred.
Setup & Layout:
Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
Reserve: Deal 13 cards into a single reserve pile. The top card is face up; the remaining 12 are face down.
Foundations: There are two foundation piles:
One foundation is built up in suit (Ace to King).
The other is built down in suit (King to Ace).
Tableau (Lanes): Four tableau piles (also called lanes) are each dealt one card face up.
Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, placed face down.
Waste: Cards discarded from the stock are placed face up in the waste pile.
Summary of Play Areas:
Reserve: 13 cards (top card face up, rest face down)
Foundations: 2 piles (initially empty)
Tableau: 4 piles (1 card each, all face up)
Stock: Remaining cards, face down
Waste: Face up, receives cards from stock
Lafayette Solitaire Rules:
Foundations:
One foundation is built up by suit (e.g., Ace, 2, 3, … King).
The other is built down by suit (e.g., King, Queen, Jack, … Ace).
Cards must match the suit and follow the appropriate sequence direction.
Tableau Building:
Cards in the tableau are built down in alternating colors (e.g., red on black or black on red), regardless of suit.
Only one card may be moved at a time within the tableau.
Reserve:
Only the top (face-up) card of the reserve is available for play.
The reserve card may be played to either the tableau or the foundations, following the respective building rules.
Stock and Waste:
Cards are drawn from the stock one at a time to the waste pile.
The top card of the waste pile is available for play to the tableau or the foundations.
The stock may be recycled (turned over) once the pile is exhausted, depending on house rules or software implementation.
Gameplay:
On each turn, the player may:
Move the top card of the reserve, waste, or any tableau pile to a foundation if it fits the sequence and suit.
Move the top card of the reserve, waste, or another tableau pile onto a tableau pile if it fits the descending, alternating color sequence.
Draw a card from the stock to the waste pile if no other moves are possible or desired.
Only the top card of each tableau pile, the face-up reserve card, and the top waste card are available for play.
When a tableau pile becomes empty, it may be filled with any card (not limited to Kings).
Play continues until all cards are moved to the foundations or no further legal moves are possible.
Winning & Losing Conditions:
Win: The game is won when all 52 cards are correctly placed on the two foundation piles, following their respective building rules.
Lose: The game is lost (or unwinnable) if no further legal moves are possible and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.
Special Rules & Edge Cases:
Filling Empty Tableau Spaces: Any card may be used to fill an empty tableau space, not just Kings.
Reserve Restrictions: Only the top (face-up) reserve card is available at any time. Once played, the next card beneath is turned face up and becomes available.
Stock Recycling: The stock may be recycled (reshuffled and reused) according to house rules or software limits; check specific implementation for restrictions.
Sequence Movement: Only single cards may be moved at a time within the tableau; sequences cannot be moved as a group.
No Suit Matching in Tableau: Tableau building is by alternating color, not by suit.
Note: Lafayette Solitaire is a variant of Canfield, distinguished primarily by its two foundation piles (one building up, one building down) and the use of a 13-card reserve. Always consult the specific rules of your platform or host, as minor variations may exist.
