How to play Lanes?

Game Objective:

The primary objective in Lanes Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the foundations, building each foundation pile up in suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Foundations: Begin by removing the four Aces from the deck and placing them as the initial cards of the four foundation piles.
  • Tableau: Deal six columns with three cards each, all face-up. These columns are referred to as the tableau.
  • Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, placed face-down.
  • Waste: A single waste pile is used to hold cards drawn from the stock that cannot be immediately played.

Key Play Areas:

  • Foundations: Four piles, built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Tableau: Six columns of three face-up cards each. Cards here are built down in alternating colors.
  • Stock: Face-down pile from which cards are drawn one at a time.
  • Waste: Face-up pile for cards drawn from the stock.

Lanes Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations: Cards are built up by suit, starting from Ace and ending with King (e.g., 2♠ on Ace♠, 3♠ on 2♠, etc.).
  • Tableau Building: Cards are built down in alternating colors (e.g., red on black or black on red). Only one card may be moved at a time.
  • Card Movement:
    • Only the top card of each tableau column, the top card of the waste, and the top card of the stock are available for play.
    • Cards may be moved from the tableau or waste to the foundations if they fit the sequence and suit requirement.
    • Cards may be moved between tableau columns if they follow the alternating color and descending rank rule.
  • Stock & Waste:
    • Draw one card at a time from the stock to the waste pile.
    • Only the top card of the waste is playable.
    • One redeal is permitted: after the stock is exhausted, the waste pile may be turned over to form a new stock for one additional pass through the deck.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
    • Move available cards from tableau or waste to the foundations if possible.
    • Move cards between tableau columns according to the building rules (down in rank, alternating colors).
    • Draw cards from the stock to the waste pile when no moves are possible in the tableau.
    • Continue play, prioritizing moves to the foundations.
  • Introducing New Cards:
    • Draw one card at a time from the stock to the waste pile.
    • After the stock is depleted, the waste pile may be turned over for one more cycle through the deck.
  • No Legal Moves:
    • If no moves are possible and the stock and waste are exhausted, the game ends in a loss.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all cards are successfully built onto the foundations, completing each suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing: The game is lost if the player cannot make any legal moves and there are cards remaining in the tableau, stock, or waste.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces: Any exposed card (from the tableau, waste, or stock) may be moved into an empty tableau space.
  • Redeal Limit: Only one redeal is allowed; after the stock is exhausted a second time, no further redeals may occur.
  • Movement Restriction: Only single cards may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved as a unit.
  • Playable Cards: Only the topmost card of each tableau column, the top card of the waste, and the top card of the stock are playable at any time.

Definitions:

  • Foundation: A pile where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Tableau: The main play area consisting of six columns of three face-up cards each.
  • Stock: The face-down pile from which cards are drawn.
  • Waste: The face-up pile for cards drawn from the stock that are not immediately played.
