How to play Lucky Fan?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Lucky Fan Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau to the four foundation piles, building each foundation up in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: A standard 52-card deck is used.
  • Dealing: Deal all 52 cards face-up into eighteen tableau piles (called "fans"):
    • The first sixteen piles each receive three cards.
    • The last two piles each receive two cards.
  • Play Areas:
    • Tableau (Fans): Eighteen piles, each called a "fan," where all cards are dealt face-up and are accessible for play.
    • Foundations: Four empty spaces above or beside the tableau, one for each suit, to be built up from Ace to King.
  • Stock, Reserve, Cells: There is no stock, reserve, or cell area in this variant.

Lucky Fan Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement:
    • Only the top card of each fan is available for play.
    • Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved together.
  • Building on Tableau:
    • Fans build down by suit only (e.g., 6♠ can be placed on 7♠).
    • Only the top, exposed card of a fan may be moved to another fan or to a foundation.
  • Building on Foundations:
    • Foundations are built up by suit, starting with the Ace and ending with the King (e.g., A♣, 2♣, 3♣, …, K♣).
    • Only Aces may be moved to empty foundation spaces.
    • Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved back to the tableau.
  • Moving to Empty Fans:
    • Only Kings may be moved to fill empty fan spaces.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
    • Examine the tableau and move any available Aces to the foundation piles.
    • Move cards between fans, building down by suit, to expose Aces and other playable cards.
    • Move cards from the fans to the foundations in ascending order by suit as they become available.
    • Only the top card of each fan is available for play at any time.
    • Only one card may be moved at a time.
  • No Stock or Redeal:
    • There is no stock pile or redeal; all cards are in play from the start.
  • No Sequence Moves:
    • Sequences of cards cannot be moved together; only single cards may be moved.
  • When No Moves Remain:
    • If no legal moves are available and not all cards are on the foundations, the game ends in a loss.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition:
    • The game is won when all 52 cards have been successfully moved to the four foundations, each built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing/Unwinnable Condition:
    • The game is lost if no further legal moves can be made and not all cards are on the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Fans:
    • Only Kings may be moved to fill an empty fan (tableau pile). No other cards may occupy empty fans.
  • No Sequence Movement:
    • Only single cards can be moved at a time, never sequences.
  • All Cards Face-Up:
    • All cards are dealt and remain face-up throughout the game, ensuring full visibility and strategic planning.

    • Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be returned to the tableau.
  • No Stock, Reserve, or Redeal:
    • There is no stock pile, reserve pile, or opportunity to redeal; all cards are dealt at the start and remain in play.
