How to play Millie?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Millie Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock onto the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Millie Solitaire uses two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Tableau: Eight tableau piles are created, each with one card dealt face up.
  • Foundations: Eight foundation piles are designated, initially empty.
  • Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, which is placed face down.
  • Card Orientation: All tableau cards are dealt face up. Stock cards are face down until dealt. Foundations are built face up as cards are added.

Millie Solitaire Rules:

Fundamental Principles:

  • Foundations: Build up by suit, starting with an Ace. Only an Ace can be placed on an empty foundation. Subsequent cards must follow ascending order and match suit (e.g., 2♠ on Ace♠, then 3♠, etc.).
  • Tableau: Build down by alternating colors (red on black, black on red). For example, a 6♠ (black) may be placed on a 7♦ (red).
  • Card Movement: Any card may be moved to an empty tableau pile. Sequences of cards built down by alternating colors can be moved together as a group within the tableau.
  • Stock: When activated, the stock deals one card face up to each tableau pile, regardless of whether the pile is empty or occupied.

Sequence Building:

  • Tableau: Cards (or sequences) can be moved if they follow the alternating color and descending rank rule.
  • Foundations: Only cards following ascending rank and matching suit may be placed.

Movement Conditions:

  • From Tableau to Foundation: Any eligible card can move to its corresponding foundation if it follows the ascending suit sequence.
  • From Tableau to Tableau: Cards or sequences can move if they follow the descending, alternating color rule. Any card may fill an empty tableau space.
  • From Stock to Tableau: When the stock is activated, it deals one card face up to each tableau pile.

Gameplay:

  • Player Actions:

  • Move eligible cards from tableau to foundations.

  • Rearrange cards within the tableau, moving single cards or sequences that follow the descending, alternating color rule.

  • Fill empty tableau spaces with any card or sequence.

  • Activate the stock to deal one card face up to each tableau pile.

  • Introducing New Cards:

  • The stock is used to refresh the tableau by dealing one card to each pile when triggered.

  • This continues until the stock is exhausted.

  • No More Legal Moves:

  • If no moves are possible and the stock is depleted, the game ends.

  • There is no redeal of the stock once exhausted.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning:

  • The game is won when all 104 cards are successfully built onto the eight foundations, each completed from Ace to King by suit.

  • Losing/Unwinnable State:

  • The game is lost or unwinnable if no more legal moves can be made and the stock is exhausted, leaving cards in the tableau.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Spaces:
  • Any card or sequence may be moved to an empty tableau pile; there is no restriction (e.g., not limited to Kings).
  • Sequence Movement:
  • Sequences built down by alternating colors can be moved as a unit within the tableau.
  • Stock Dealing:
  • Each activation of the stock deals one card to every tableau pile, regardless of whether the pile is empty or occupied.
  • No Reserve or Redeal:
  • Millie Solitaire does not feature a reserve cell or a redeal of the stock once depleted.
  • Odds & Skill:
  • The odds of winning are low (about 1 in 7 games), and success depends equally on skill and luck.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main play area with eight piles for building sequences by alternating color and descending rank.
  • Foundation: The goal piles where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Stock: The supply of undealt cards used to refresh the tableau.
  • Sequence: A group of cards arranged in descending order, alternating colors, which can be moved together.
