The primary goal in Milligan Cell Solitaire is to move all 104 cards (using two standard 52-card decks) to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.
Setup & Layout:
Deck: Two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
Foundations: Eight foundation piles, initially empty. Each foundation will be built up by suit from Ace to King.
Tableau: Eight tableau piles. At the start, deal one card face-up to each tableau pile.
Cells: Four free cells. Each cell can hold only one card at a time, and all are empty at the start.
Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, which is used to deal additional cards to the tableau.
Card Orientation: All cards dealt to the tableau are face-up. Cards in the stock are face-down until dealt.
Milligan Cell Solitaire Rules:
Foundations:
Build up by suit from Ace to King (e.g., Ace♠, 2♠, 3♠, … King♠).
Only an Ace may be placed on an empty foundation.
Tableau:
Build down by alternating color (red on black, black on red).
Sequences of cards built down in alternating colors can be moved as a group.
Only a King or a sequence starting with a King may be moved to an empty tableau pile.
Cells:
Any single card may be moved to an empty cell.
Each cell can hold only one card at a time.
Cards in cells can be moved back to the tableau or to the foundation if legal.
Stock:
When activated, deals one card face-up to each tableau pile, regardless of whether the pile is empty or occupied.
Moves:
Only the top card of each tableau pile, cell, or foundation is available for play.
Cards or sequences can be moved between tableau piles if they follow the alternating color and descending rank rule.
Cards can be moved from tableau or cells to the foundations if they match the building requirements.
Gameplay:
On each turn, the player may:
Move the top card of any tableau pile or cell to another tableau pile, to a cell, or to a foundation, following the building rules.
Move a sequence of cards built down in alternating colors between tableau piles.
Move any single card to an empty cell (if available).
Move a King or a sequence starting with a King to an empty tableau pile.
At any time, the player may activate the stock to deal one card face-up to each tableau pile.
When no further moves are possible, and the stock is not exhausted, the player must deal from the stock.
After the stock is depleted, play continues with the remaining cards in the tableau and cells until no more legal moves are available.
Winning & Losing Conditions:
Win: The game is won when all 104 cards are moved to the eight foundation piles, correctly built up by suit from Ace to King.
Lose/Unwinnable: The game is lost or becomes unwinnable if no further legal moves can be made and the stock is exhausted, with cards remaining in the tableau or cells.
Special Rules & Edge Cases:
Filling Empty Tableau Piles: Only a King or a sequence starting with a King may be placed in an empty tableau pile.
Cells: Each cell can hold only one card. Any available card may be moved into an empty cell, and cards in cells can be played back to the tableau or to the foundation if legal.
Stock Dealing: When dealing from the stock, one card is dealt face-up to each tableau pile, including empty piles.
Sequence Movement: Sequences built down in alternating colors can be moved as a group between tableau piles, provided there are enough empty cells and/or tableau spaces to facilitate the move, following standard FreeCell movement logic.
No Redeal: Once the stock is exhausted, no further cards are dealt; play continues only with the tableau and cells.
Unplayable State: If all tableau piles, cells, and the stock are exhausted of legal moves, the game is over and considered lost unless all cards are in the foundations.
Note: Milligan Cell Solitaire combines the tableau and cell mechanics of FreeCell with the double-deck, stock-dealing, and King-only tableau filling rules of Miss Milligan, resulting in a game that is highly skill-based and offers a very high chance of winnability.
