How to play Milligan Yukon?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Milligan Yukon Solitaire is to build all cards from the tableau onto the foundation piles, arranging each foundation in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Tableau: Arrange eight tableau piles horizontally. The first pile contains 1 card, the second pile 2 cards, the third pile 3 cards, continuing up to the eighth pile with 8 cards. Only the top card of each pile is dealt face up; all other cards in each pile are face down beneath the top card.
  • Foundations: Four empty foundation piles are placed above the tableau. These will be built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Stock, Reserve, Cells: There is no stock, reserve, or cell area in Milligan Yukon Solitaire.

Milligan Yukon Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement: Only face-up cards are eligible for play. When a face-down card is uncovered, it is immediately turned face up and becomes playable.
  • Building Sequences (Tableau): Cards are built down in the tableau by alternating color (red on black or black on red). Groups of cards can be moved together, regardless of the sequence of the cards beneath the top card, as long as the top card forms a valid descending sequence with the card it is placed on.
  • Moving Cards/Sequences: Any face-up card and all cards beneath it (regardless of their order) may be moved as a unit to another tableau pile, provided the move creates a valid descending sequence of alternating colors.
  • Foundations: Foundations are built up by suit, starting with Ace and ending with King.
  • Empty Spaces: Only a King or a group of cards headed by a King may be placed in an empty tableau pile.

Gameplay:

  • Player Actions:
  • Move any face-up card or group of cards (headed by a face-up card) to another tableau pile, following the building rules.
  • Move Aces to empty foundation piles as they become available, then continue building up by suit.
  • Whenever a face-down card is exposed, immediately turn it face up.
  • Fill empty tableau spaces only with a King or a group of cards headed by a King.
  • No Stock or Reserve: There are no additional cards to draw; all cards are in play from the start.
  • End of Moves: If no legal moves are available, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all 52 cards are successfully built onto the four foundation piles in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing/Unwinnable State: The game is lost or unwinnable if no further legal moves can be made and not all cards are in the foundation piles.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles: Only Kings or groups of cards headed by a King may be placed in empty tableau spaces.
  • Moving Groups: Groups of cards can be moved together, even if the cards below the top card are not in sequence, provided the top card forms a valid move.
  • Exposure of Face-Down Cards: Immediately turn face-up any card that becomes exposed during play.
  • No Stock or Redeal: There is no stockpile, redeal, or reserve; all cards are dealt at the start of the game.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main play area consisting of eight piles where cards are arranged and manipulated.
  • Foundation: The area where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Face-up/Face-down: Face-up cards are visible and playable; face-down cards are hidden until uncovered.
