How to play Odd and Even?

Game Objective:

The objective of Odd and Even Solitaire is to move all cards from the reserve, stock, and waste to the foundation piles, building them in a unique sequence by twos, until every card from both decks is placed in the foundations.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use two standard 52-card decks (104 cards total).
  • Reserve: Deal nine cards face-up in a 3x3 grid; this is the reserve. All reserve cards are available for play.
  • Foundations: There are eight foundation piles, one for each Ace and Two (Deuce) of every suit. These are created as the corresponding cards become available.
  • Stock: The remaining cards form the face-down stock pile.
  • Waste: When a card from the stock cannot be played, it is placed face-up on the waste pile. Only the top card of the waste is available for play.
  • Face Orientation: All reserve cards are dealt face-up. The stock is face-down. The waste is face-up (top card only accessible). Foundations are built face-up.

Key Play Areas:

  • Reserve: 3x3 grid of nine face-up cards.
  • Foundations: Eight piles (one for each Ace and Two).
  • Stock: Face-down draw pile.
  • Waste: Face-up discard pile.

Odd and Even Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:
  • Each suit has two foundation piles: one starting with an Ace, one with a Two.
  • Building on Aces: Build up in suit by twos, using only odd-numbered ranks, in this sequence:
    A, 3, 5, 7, 9, J, K.
    After King, continue with: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, Q (even numbers).
  • Building on Twos: Build up in suit by twos, using only even-numbered ranks, in this sequence:
    2, 4, 6, 8, 10, Q.
    After Queen, continue with: A, 3, 5, 7, 9, J, K (odd numbers).
  • Building is always in suit and in steps of two ranks (e.g., 3 on Ace, 5 on 3, etc.).
  • Reserve:
  • Cards in the reserve are always available for play to the foundations.
  • No building or moving between reserve piles.
  • Each reserve pile holds only one card at a time.
  • Stock and Waste:
  • When no moves can be made from the reserve or waste, draw one card at a time from the stock.
  • If the drawn card cannot be played, place it face-up on the waste.
  • Only the top card of the waste is available for play to the foundations or to fill reserve gaps.
  • Redeal:
  • One redeal is permitted. When the stock is exhausted, pick up the waste pile (without shuffling), turn it over to form a new stock, and continue.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • Move any available card from the reserve or the top of the waste to the foundations if it fits the building sequence and suit.
  • Whenever a reserve space is emptied, immediately fill it with the top card from the waste. If the waste is empty, fill from the stock.
  • If no further moves are possible, draw one card from the stock and place it on the waste (if it cannot be played directly).
  • Continue this process, always playing to the foundations when possible, and refilling reserve spaces as described.
  • Redeal:
  • When the stock is depleted, gather the waste pile, turn it over (do not shuffle), and use it as the new stock. Only one redeal is allowed per game.
  • End of Play:
  • The game ends when either all cards are moved to the foundations (win) or no further moves are possible after the redeal (loss).

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: The game is won when all 104 cards have been moved to the foundation piles, correctly sequenced by suit and by twos.
  • Loss: The game is lost if, after the single allowed redeal, there are still cards remaining in the reserve, stock, or waste that cannot be played to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Reserve Spaces:
Any empty space in the reserve is filled immediately, first from the waste (if available), then from the stock if the waste is empty.
  • No Building on Reserve:
Cards cannot be built or moved between reserve piles; only the top card of each reserve pile is available for foundation play.
  • No Building on Waste:
Only the top card of the waste is available for play; no cards can be moved onto the waste except from the stock.
  • Sequence Wrapping:
When building on foundations, after reaching the end of the sequence (King for odd, Queen for even), continue the next sequence as specified (e.g., after King, play 2; after Queen, play Ace).
  • One Card Movement:
Only individual cards may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved as a group.
  • No Further Redeals:
Only one redeal is permitted. After the second pass through the stock, no further redeals are allowed.
