How to play Pas Seul?

Game Objective:

The primary objective in Pas Seul Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the four foundation piles, building each foundation up in suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck.
  • Tableau: Deal six tableau piles. Each pile receives three cards, splayed downward. The top card of each pile is dealt face up; the two cards beneath are face down.
  • Foundations: Four foundation piles, one for each suit, start empty. Aces are moved here as soon as they become available.
  • Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, placed face down.
  • Waste: When drawing from the stock, cards are placed face up on a waste pile.
  • Key Play Areas Defined:
  • Tableau: Six columns where cards are built down by alternating color.
  • Foundations: Four piles, one per suit, built up from Ace to King.
  • Stock: The draw pile for unused cards.
  • Waste: Receives cards drawn from the stock that cannot be immediately played.

Pas Seul Solitaire Rules:

  • Tableau Building: Cards are built down in the tableau by alternating colors (e.g., a red 7 on a black 8).
  • Moving Cards: Only the top face-up card of each tableau pile is available for play. Sequences of cards in correct order (down by alternating color) may be moved together as a unit.
  • Foundations: Cards are built up in suit from Ace to King (e.g., Ace, 2, 3, … King of Hearts).
  • Stock and Waste: Cards are drawn one at a time from the stock to the waste pile. The top card of the waste is available for play to either the tableau or the foundations.
  • Redeal: Only one pass through the stock is allowed; there are no redeals.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:
  • Move a face-up tableau card (or a valid sequence) onto another tableau pile, following the alternating color, descending rank rule.
  • Move a face-up tableau card or the top waste card to a foundation pile if it follows the ascending suit sequence.
  • Draw the top card from the stock to the waste pile if no other moves are possible.
  • When a tableau pile becomes empty, any card (or valid sequence) may be moved into the space.
  • Only one card at a time is drawn from the stock, and only one pass through the stock is permitted.
  • Play continues until all cards are moved to the foundations or no further moves are possible.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all 52 cards are successfully moved to the four foundation piles, each built up in suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing: The game is lost if, after the single pass through the stock, no further legal moves are possible and not all cards are in the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Spaces: Any card or valid sequence may be moved into an empty tableau pile.
  • No Redeals: Once the stock is exhausted, no redeal is permitted. The waste pile is not recycled.
  • Sequence Movement: Multiple cards forming a descending, alternating-color sequence may be moved together between tableau piles.
  • Foundation Transfers: Only cards in proper ascending suit order may be moved to the foundations. Aces must be moved to start each foundation as soon as they become available.
  • Edge Case – Stock Depletion: If the stock runs out and no moves remain, the game ends immediately.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main play area with six columns where cards are arranged and manipulated.
  • Foundations: The four piles where cards are built up in suit.
  • Stock: The pile of undealt cards.
  • Waste: The pile where cards from the stock are placed face up for play.
