How to play Penta?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Penta Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the foundation piles, building each foundation in ascending order starting with Ace, regardless of suit.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Used: Two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Initial Deal:
  • Three tableau piles are created on the left, each with one card dealt face up.
  • All cards in the tableau are dealt face up; there are no face-down cards in play.
  • Play Areas Defined:
  • Tableau: Three left piles, each starting with one face-up card.
  • Foundations: Four piles to be built up from Ace regardless of suit.
  • Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, from which cards are drawn into play.

Penta Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement Principles:
  • Cards may be moved onto a tableau pile if they are exactly one rank lower than the top card of that pile, regardless of suit.
  • Only one card at a time may be moved; sequences cannot be moved as a group.
  • Foundations are built up from Ace to King, regardless of suit.
  • Building Sequences:
  • Tableau piles are built down in rank, but suit does not matter (e.g., a 6 can be placed on a 7 of any suit).
  • Foundations are built up in rank, starting with Ace, regardless of suit.
  • Moving Cards:
  • Cards from the stock can be played to either the tableau or the foundations, following the building rules above.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • On each turn, the player may move any eligible card from the tableau or stock to another tableau pile or to the foundations, following building rules.
  • After all possible moves are made, the player draws the next card from the stock and places it face up, making it available for play.
  • Introducing New Cards:
  • Cards are drawn one at a time from the stock pile and played as described above.
  • If No Moves Are Possible:
  • If no legal moves are available, the player draws from the stock until it is exhausted.
  • If the stock is empty and no moves remain, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all 104 cards have been moved to the foundation piles, built up from Ace to King in each pile.
  • Losing: The game is lost (unwinnable) if the stock is depleted and no further legal moves can be made to advance cards to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Piles:
  • Any card may be placed onto an empty tableau pile, not restricted to Kings.
  • Restrictions & Exceptions:
  • Only single cards may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved together.
  • Suit is ignored for both tableau and foundation building; only rank matters.
  • Edge Case—Multiple Foundations:
  • Foundations do not require suit separation; any Ace starts a foundation, and any card of the next rank can be played on top, regardless of suit.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The primary play area consisting of three piles where cards are built down in rank.
  • Foundation: Piles where cards are built up from Ace to King, regardless of suit.
  • Stock: The pile of undealt cards from which cards are drawn into play.

Note: These rules are specific to Penta Solitaire and differ from classic Solitaire in the number of decks, tableau setup, and building rules.
