How to play Quadrennial?

Game Objective:

The primary objective of Quadrennial Solitaire is to move all cards from the reserve and stock piles to the foundation piles, building each foundation up in suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck (no Jokers).
  • Foundations: Four empty foundation piles, one for each suit, are placed in the play area.
  • Reserve: Deal one card face up to each of eight reserve piles, for a total of eight cards. All reserve cards are visible from the start.
  • Stock: Place the remaining 44 cards face down as the stock pile.
  • Waste: A waste pile is used for cards drawn from the stock that cannot be immediately played.

Key Play Areas Defined:

  • Foundations: Where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Reserve: Eight piles, each with one face-up card at the start. No building is allowed on these piles.
  • Stock: The draw pile for the remainder of the deck.
  • Waste: Where unplayable stock cards are placed face up.

Quadrennial Solitaire Rules:

  • Building on Foundations: Foundations are built up by suit, starting with Ace and ending with King (e.g., Ace, 2, 3, …, King of Hearts).
  • Building on Reserve: No building is permitted on the reserve piles. Each reserve pile always has at most one card, which is available for play to the foundations.
  • Stock and Waste: Cards are drawn from the stock, one at a time, and placed face up on the waste pile if not playable. Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play.
  • Card Movement: Only one card at a time may be moved, and only to the foundations. Cards can be moved from the reserve or from the waste pile to the foundations.
  • Redeals: After the stock is exhausted, the waste pile can be turned over to form a new stock. This redeal is permitted twice, for a total of three passes through the stock.

Gameplay:

  1. Initial Moves: Examine the eight reserve cards. Move any Aces to the foundation piles immediately.
  2. Drawing from Stock: If no more reserve cards can be played, draw one card from the stock and place it face up on the waste pile. If the drawn card can be played to a foundation, do so. Otherwise, leave it on the waste pile.
  3. Playing from Waste: The top card of the waste pile is always available for play to the foundations.
  4. Reserve Play: Whenever a reserve pile is emptied (its card is played to a foundation), immediately deal a new card from the stock to that reserve pile, face up. If the stock is empty, no new card is dealt to the reserve.
  5. Redeals: When the stock is exhausted, turn the waste pile over (without shuffling) to form a new stock. You may do this twice (for a total of three passes through the stock).
  6. Sequence of Actions: The player alternates between playing available cards from reserve and waste to the foundations, drawing from the stock, and refilling reserve piles as needed.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The game is won when all 52 cards have been moved to the foundations, each built up in suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing Condition: The game is lost (unwinnable) if, after the allowed redeals, no further moves can be made and not all cards are in the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Reserve Piles: Whenever a reserve pile becomes empty (its card is moved to a foundation), immediately deal a new card from the stock to that pile, face up. If the stock is exhausted, the reserve pile remains empty.
  • No Building on Reserve: You cannot place cards onto the reserve piles; they always contain at most one card.
  • Stock Exhaustion and Redeal: After the third pass through the stock (two redeals), play continues only with available reserve and waste cards. No further redeals are allowed.
  • No Tableau Movement: Unlike Klondike or other solitaire variants, there is no tableau building or movement of sequences; all moves are strictly from reserve or waste to foundations.

This ruleset reflects the unique mechanics of Quadrennial Solitaire as described in official and authoritative sources.
