How to play Roosevelt?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Roosevelt Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Roosevelt Solitaire uses two standard 52-card decks (104 cards total).
  • Tableau: There are seven tableau piles. Each tableau pile is dealt four cards, all face up, for a total of 28 cards in the tableau.
  • Foundations: There are eight foundation piles, initially empty.
  • Stock: The remaining cards after dealing to the tableau form the stock pile, placed face down.
  • Waste: There is one waste pile, which receives cards dealt from the stock, face up.

Key Play Areas:

  • Tableau: The main play area where cards are built down by alternating color.
  • Foundations: The target piles where cards are built up by suit.
  • Stock: Supplies additional cards to play.
  • Waste: Temporary holding area for cards drawn from the stock.

Roosevelt Solitaire Rules:

Card Movements and Interactions:

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile or the waste pile may be moved at any time.
  • Tableau Building: Cards in the tableau are built down by alternating colors (e.g., a red 9 can be placed on a black 10).
  • Foundation Building: Foundations are built up by suit, starting with Ace and proceeding in ascending order to King (e.g., Ace♠, 2♠, 3♠, … King♠).
  • Moving Cards: Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved as a unit.
  • Any card may be moved to an empty tableau pile.

Conditions for Moving Cards:

  • To Tableau: A card can be placed on a tableau pile if it is one rank lower and of the opposite color than the top card of that pile.
  • To Foundation: A card can be moved to a foundation pile if it is the next higher rank and of the same suit as the top card of that foundation (or an Ace onto an empty foundation).
  • From Stock: One card is dealt face up from the stock to the waste pile at a time.

Gameplay:

  1. Initial Moves: After setup, examine the tableau for any possible moves to the foundations or valid tableau builds.
  2. Making Moves: Players may:
  • Move the top card of any tableau pile to another tableau pile (if it follows the alternating color and descending rank rule).
  • Move the top card of any tableau pile or the waste to a foundation (if it follows the ascending by suit rule).
  • Move any card to fill an empty tableau pile.
  1. Dealing from Stock: When no more moves are possible or desired, deal one card from the stock to the waste pile.
  2. Using the Waste: The top card of the waste pile is always available for play to either the tableau or the foundations.
  3. Repeat: Continue making moves and dealing from the stock until all cards are moved to the foundations or no legal moves remain.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The game is won when all 104 cards are successfully moved to the eight foundation piles, each built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing Condition: The game is lost (unwinnable) if no further legal moves are possible and there are cards remaining in the tableau, waste, or stock.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles: Any card may be moved into an empty tableau pile; there are no restrictions on which card can fill a space.
  • Single Card Movement: Only one card may be moved at a time; you cannot move a sequence of cards together.
  • Stock Dealing: Only one card is dealt to the waste at a time from the stock. There are no redeals; once the stock is exhausted, no new cards can be introduced.
  • No Sequence Moves: Unlike some solitaire variants, you cannot move a group of cards together, even if they are in correct sequence and color alternation.
  • Odds of Winning: The game is considered very challenging, with a win rate of about 1% (1 in 100 games).

Note: Roosevelt Solitaire is a challenging patience game that emphasizes careful planning and efficient card movement, with strict limitations on moving only single cards and a high reliance on skillful play.
