How to play Rouge Forty?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Rouge Forty Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the foundation piles, building each foundation in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Uses a standard 52-card deck.
  • Tableau: Deal ten tableau piles with four cards each (totaling 40 cards). In each pile, only the top card is dealt face up; the other three cards in each pile are dealt face down.
  • Stock: The remaining 12 cards form the stock, placed face down.
  • Foundations: Four foundation piles, one for each suit, start empty.
  • Key Play Areas:
  • Tableau: Ten piles with a mix of face-up and face-down cards.
  • Foundations: Four piles, one per suit, to be built from Ace to King.
  • Stock: The draw pile for introducing new cards into play.

Rouge Forty Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement:
  • Only the top face-up card of each tableau pile is available for play.
  • Cards can be moved onto another tableau pile if the card being moved is one rank lower and of the same suit as the card it is placed upon (e.g., move 6♠ onto 7♠).
  • Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved together.
  • Foundation Building:
  • Foundations are built up by suit, starting with the Ace and ending with the King (A♠, 2♠, 3♠, …, K♠).
  • Only the next sequential card of the same suit may be placed on a foundation pile.
  • Stock Usage:
  • When no moves are available on the tableau, draw one card at a time from the stock.
  • The drawn card may be played to the tableau or directly to the foundations if legal.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, perform any of the following actions:
  • Move a face-up tableau card to another tableau pile if it follows the descending, same-suit rule.
  • Move a face-up tableau card to a foundation if it is the next card in sequence for that suit.
  • Draw a card from the stock when no other moves are available; play it to the tableau or foundation if possible.
  • When a face-down card in the tableau is uncovered (by moving the face-up card), turn it face up and it becomes available for play.
  • Continue making legal moves and drawing from the stock until either all cards are moved to the foundations (win) or no further moves are possible (loss).

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: All cards are successfully moved to the foundation piles, each built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Loss: The game is lost if no legal moves remain and the stock is exhausted, leaving cards stranded in the tableau or stock.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces: Any card (from the tableau or the stock) may be moved into an empty tableau pile.
  • Uncovering Cards: When the top face-up card of a tableau pile is moved, immediately turn the next face-down card in that pile face up.
  • Stock Limit: Only one pass through the stock is allowed; once the stock is exhausted, no new cards can be introduced.
  • Sequence Movement Restriction: Only single cards can be moved at a time, even if cards are in sequence.
  • No Redeals: There is no redeal of the stock; careful planning is required to avoid blocking essential cards.

Note: Rouge Forty Solitaire is a variant of Forty Thieves but uses a single deck and a unique tableau structure with face-down cards, which increases the importance of uncovering and managing tableau piles strategically.
