How to play Sally?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Sally Solitaire is to move all 104 cards from two standard 52-card decks into eight foundation piles by building each foundation up in sequence by suit, starting from a specific base rank and wrapping from King to Ace if necessary.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Foundations: Eight foundation piles. The first foundation pile is dealt a single card face up; its rank determines the base rank for all foundations. All other foundations are empty at the start.
  • Tableau: Nine tableau piles arranged in a Klondike-style layout (details may vary slightly by implementation, but typically each tableau pile receives a descending number of cards, with only the top card face up).
  • Stock: The remaining undealt cards form the stock pile, placed face down.
  • Waste: An initially empty pile next to the stock, used for cards dealt from the stock.

Key Play Areas:

  • Foundations: Build up in suit, starting from the base rank.
  • Tableau: Build down by alternating color.
  • Stock: Source of new cards, dealt in groups of three to the waste.
  • Waste: Only the top card is available for play.

Sally Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundation Building:

  • Foundations are built up by suit, starting from the base rank (the rank of the first card dealt to the first foundation).

  • Sequences wrap around: after King, Ace may be placed, continuing upward.

  • Only cards of the same suit may be placed on a foundation pile.

  • Empty foundation spaces may only be filled with cards of the base rank.

  • Tableau Building:

  • Tableaus build down by alternating color (red/black).

  • Sequences of cards built down by alternating color may be moved together as a unit.

  • Only Kings (or sequences starting with a King) may be moved into empty tableau spaces.

  • Stock and Waste:

  • When the stock is tapped, three cards are dealt face up to the waste.

  • Only the top card of the waste is available for play.

  • Unlimited passes through the stock are permitted; when the stock is empty, the waste is turned over to reform the stock.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:
  • Move cards or valid sequences between tableau piles according to the building rules.
  • Move cards from the tableau or waste to the foundations if they follow the build-up sequence by suit.
  • Move the top card of the waste to either the tableau or foundations if legal.
  • Move sequences of cards between tableau piles if they are built down by alternating color.
  • Fill empty tableau spaces with Kings or sequences starting with a King.
  • Fill empty foundation spaces only with cards of the base rank.
  • When no moves are available, the player may deal three new cards from the stock to the waste.
  • The player may cycle through the stock and waste as many times as needed.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: The game is won when all 104 cards are successfully moved to the eight foundation piles, each built up in suit from the base rank through a complete sequence (wrapping from King to Ace if necessary).
  • Loss: The game is lost or unwinnable if no legal moves remain and all cards cannot be moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Foundations: Only cards of the base rank (the rank of the first foundation card) may fill empty foundation spaces.
  • Filling Empty Tableaus: Only Kings (or sequences starting with a King) may fill empty tableau spaces.
  • Sequence Movement: Only sequences built down by alternating color may be moved together between tableau piles.
  • Stock Cycling: There is no limit to the number of times the stock may be recycled; the player may continue cycling as long as moves remain.
  • Wrap-Around Building: Foundations allow wrap-around building, so after King comes Ace, then 2, and so on, maintaining suit.

Definitions:

  • Foundation: A pile where cards are built up by suit, starting from a specific base rank.
  • Tableau: The main play area where cards are built down by alternating color.
  • Stock: The pile of undealt cards from which cards are drawn.
  • Waste: The pile where cards from the stock are placed, with only the top card available for play.
