How to play San Juan Hill?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in San Juan Hill Solitaire is to move all 104 cards (from two standard 52-card decks) to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Foundations ("Hills"): There are eight foundation piles. Each is dealt one Ace face up at the start.
  • Tableau ("Rough Riders"): There are ten tableau piles, each called a "rough riders." Four cards are dealt face up to each rough riders pile (totaling 40 cards).
  • Stock: The remaining cards form a face-down stock pile.
  • Waste: The waste pile starts empty.

Key Play Areas:

  • Foundations (Hills): Build up by suit, starting with Ace.
  • Tableau (Rough Riders): Build down by suit.
  • Stock: Supplies additional cards into play.
  • Waste: Temporarily holds cards dealt from the stock.

All tableau cards are dealt face up. Foundations start with Aces face up. The stock is face down; the waste is face up.

San Juan Hill Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations (Hills):
  • Build up by suit, starting with Ace and ending with King (e.g., Ace♠, 2♠, 3♠, …, King♠).
  • Only the next higher card of the same suit may be placed (e.g., 2♠ on Ace♠).
  • Tableau (Rough Riders):
  • Build down by suit (e.g., 10♠ on Jack♠).
  • Only the top card of each pile is available for play.
  • Any single card may be moved to an empty tableau pile.
  • Stock and Waste:
  • The stock deals one card at a time to the waste pile.
  • Only the top card of the waste is available for play.
  • There is no redeal; once the stock is exhausted, no new cards can be dealt.
  • Card Movement:
  • Cards may be moved from the tableau or waste to the foundations, following suit and sequence rules.
  • Cards may be moved between tableau piles if they follow the build-down-by-suit rule.
  • Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved as a block.

Gameplay:

  1. Move Available Cards: Move eligible cards from the tableau or waste to the foundations if possible.
  2. Build Tableau: Move cards within the tableau, building down by suit. Only the top card of each tableau pile can be moved.
  3. Fill Empty Tableau: Any single card can be placed into an empty tableau pile.
  4. Deal from Stock: When no more moves are available, deal one card from the stock to the waste. The top card of the waste becomes available for play.
  5. Repeat: Continue moving cards and dealing from the stock until all cards are moved to the foundations or no more moves are possible.
  6. No Redeals: Once the stock is depleted, you may not reshuffle or redeal the waste.

If no legal moves remain and the stock is empty, play ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win: All 104 cards are moved to the eight foundations, each built up from Ace to King by suit.
  • Lose: The game is lost if no more legal moves are possible and not all cards are on the foundations (i.e., cards remain in the tableau, waste, or stock).

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Piles: Any single card may be moved into an empty tableau pile (rough riders).
  • No Sequence Moves: Only one card at a time can be moved; you cannot move a sequence of cards together.
  • Stock/Waste Limitation: Only one pass through the stock is allowed; there are no redeals. Once the waste is empty, it remains empty until more cards are dealt from the stock.
  • All Cards Face Up: All tableau cards are dealt face up, making all available moves visible to the player.

These rules distinguish San Juan Hill Solitaire from similar games (such as Forty Thieves) by providing a more accessible tableau and slightly easier gameplay due to all tableau cards being face up and Aces pre-placed on the foundations.
