How to play Saxony?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Saxony Solitaire is to move all 104 cards (using two standard 52-card decks) onto the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up in suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Two standard 52-card decks (total 104 cards).
  • Foundations: Eight piles, each starting with an Ace of each suit (one Ace per foundation).
  • Tableau: Eight piles, each initially dealt one card face up.
  • Cells: Four single-card spaces, each with one card dealt face up at the start.
  • Reserves: Four piles, each with one card dealt face up at the start; these piles are used for building down in suit.
  • Stock: The remaining cards form the stock, which is used to deal new cards to the tableau during play.

Face-up/Face-down: All cards in tableau, cells, and reserves are dealt face up. The stock is face down, and cards are revealed as they are dealt to the tableau.

Saxony Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:

  • Build up by suit, starting from Ace and ending with King (e.g., Ace♠, 2♠, 3♠, …, King♠).

  • Only cards of the same suit and in ascending order may be placed on a foundation.

  • Tableau:

  • No building is allowed (cards cannot be moved between tableau piles).

  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play.

  • When a tableau pile is empty, it remains empty until a new card is dealt from the stock.

  • Cells:

  • Each cell holds only one card at a time.

  • The top card of a cell is always available for play.

  • Any single card may be moved into an empty cell.

  • Reserves:

  • Build down by suit (e.g., Queen♠, Jack♠, 10♠, 9♠, …).

  • Only the top card of each reserve pile is available for play.

  • Any single card may be moved into an empty reserve pile.

  • Stock:

  • When activated, deals one card face up to each tableau pile.

  • Only one pass through the stock is allowed; there are no redeals.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:

  • Move the top card from any tableau, cell, or reserve pile to a foundation if it continues the in-suit sequence.

  • Move the top card from a tableau, cell, or reserve pile to a reserve pile, if it builds down in suit.

  • Move a single card from tableau, reserve, or foundation to an empty cell.

  • Move a single card from tableau, cell, or foundation to an empty reserve pile.

  • When no further moves are possible, the player may deal one card from the stock to each tableau pile.

  • Play continues with moving available cards to the foundations or reserves as allowed.

  • No building is permitted on the tableau: cards in the tableau cannot be moved between tableau piles or built upon each other.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all 104 cards are successfully moved to the eight foundation piles, each built up in suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing: The game is lost (unwinnable) if, after the stock is exhausted and no further legal moves are possible, not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Spaces:

  • Empty tableau piles remain empty until the next stock deal.

  • Empty cells and reserve piles may be filled with any single available card from tableau, reserve, or foundation.

  • Stock Use:

  • Only one pass through the stock is permitted; after the stock is depleted, no further cards can be dealt to the tableau.

  • Once a card is dealt to the tableau, it remains there until moved to a foundation or reserve.

  • No Redeals: After the stock is exhausted, the player cannot reshuffle or redeal the tableau.

  • Restriction on Movement: Only the top card of each tableau, cell, or reserve pile is available for play at any time.

  • Building Rules Recap:

  • Foundations: Build up by suit.

  • Reserves: Build down by suit.

  • Tableau: No building allowed.

  • Cells and Reserves: Function as holding areas to assist in maneuvering cards to the foundations, but with strict limits on the number of cards and building rules.
